No one in my developmental psych lectures talks about this: the grief of outgrowing someone. No fight. No villain. Just two people becoming different shapes. And you mourn them while they're still in your phone. Still "a friend." I don't think I've learned how to grieve someone who's still alive. I don't think anyone teaches you that. #grief #psychology #developmentalpsychology

Today should be my nephew's 7th birthday. Instead he will be forever 4 years old. Please, make sure you know what to do in case of a fire. Know which adult is going for which child. "In Iceland, people commemorated its first glacier formally declared lost to climate change. Western culture needs more of these rituals I remember interviewing a North Atlantic right whale expert years ago. He was a practical, science-minded man. But as we discussed a female whale that had lost her calf, he became visibly emotional. She had lost the previous one, too, struck by a ship. He seemed almost embarrassed by the depth of his feeling. I wasn’t surprised. I found his grief honorable. There are fewer than 400 North Atlantic right whales left. Every birth is a celebration; every death is mathematically and emotionally devastating." .,,.,..,,. Perhaps what we need is not only more data about ecological decline, but more permission to acknowledge what that decline feels like and means to us. We need to name it for ourselves, acknowledge its personal and local impact, and invest in storytelling that reminds us of the ecological richness we once had access to and did not protect. We need to make more noise about these losses, document them, and mourn them together. The memory can be happy, sad, frightening, funny, thoughtful, or anything else. After choosing the photo, we should identify the season connected to it and use words that suggest that season, though they do not need to be formal kigo words. The prompt invites us to write one, two, or three tanka inspired by what the photo says to us or how it makes us feel. Tanka? Tanka are five-part poems, often written as five lines in translation, with a traditional 5-7-5-7-7 sound-unit pattern. The first three units, 5-7-5, are called the kami-no-ku, or “upper phrase.” The final two units, 7-7, are called the shimo-no-ku, or “lower phrase.” Let’s write poetry together! When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option.
