💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🧠🥩 A new #math model explains why #cannibalism keeps appearing and then disappearing across human #history. The #model shows that while eating human #meat provides calories, the epidemiological costs of disease transmission quickly outweigh any benefits and lead to #community collapse. 👉 https://www.sciencealert.com/mathematics-reveals-why-human-cannibalism-keeps-reappearing #humans #anthropology #epidemiology #evolution #prions #pathogens #culture #science #biology

"The appalling truth about cyclospora is that humans are its lone source. It’s only ever been found in human feces. So if it’s in our food or water, 'it doesn’t take a rocket scientist or a microbiologist to overthink this,' said Dr. Mark Moorman, who recently retired as director of the Office of Food Safety at the US Food and Drug Administration. 'Humans are the source.'" https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/25/health/cyclospora-outbreak-investigation #PublicHealth #cyclospora #diarrhea #IDmastodon #epidemiology #FoodSafety #FDA #CDC

"USAID helped fund key divisions of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), such as the Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria. Much of that division was focused on the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), a program to combat malaria abroad, as well as other programs to fight neglected tropical diseases." https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/5984356-usaid-cuts-cyclospora-response/ #PublicHealth #diarrhea #cyclospora #epidemiology #HHS #FDA #CDC #DOGE #USpol

"Experts have long said the U.S. is underprepared to rein in foodborne outbreaks. But after the Trump administration slashed key officials — from federal employees who investigate the source of illnesses to those who share information with the public — Kennedy appears to face an even more daunting task to contain the parasite and build trust in the administration’s response." https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/23/cyclospora-outbreak-tests-rfk-jr-response-funding-cuts.html #PublicHealth #diarrhea #cyclospora #epidemiology #HHS #FDA #CDC #DOGE #USpol

Nothing earthshaking here but we did show that; "Despite its clinical utility, #6MWD and 6MWD decline do not correlate strongly with spirometric or radiographic markers of disease severity or their decline. We believe this is likely due to the nature of the test: 6MWD is self-paced and typically does not elicit physiologic exercise limitations. Correlates of 5-year decline in 6-min walk distance in the #COPDGene cohort" People tend to think that measuring the distance a person can walk in six minutes is an exercise test when it's really measuring functional exercise performance rather than physiological capacity. https://thorax.bmj.com/content/thoraxjnl/early/2026/04/13/thorax-2025-224183.full.pdf?ijkey=Eyz4AtLxZ5KIWQD&keytype=ref #Science #Epidemiology
