@OAndreas@mastodon.social From what little I know of consciousness, every living thing has it. In fact, #insects have a network of about 50 neurons. Should not be enough to twitch, much less exhibit sophisticated actions. One of the emergent theories of #consciousness (and we have about 250 of them) Is that in humans, basal ganglia is actually an antenna picking up quantum fields which are conscious. It would certainly explain the sophisticated behaviour in insects.

@jeffjarvis@mastodon.social Gemini says: Jeff Jarvis’s reaction points to a major point of friction in contemporary AI discourse: Distraction from Immediate Harms: Critics argue that debating whether a statistical language model has "feelings" or deserves rights diverts attention away from tangible, present-day issues like algorithmic bias, copyright infringement, energy consumption, and labor exploitation. #AI #consciousness

@jeffjarvis@mastodon.social 3/ Confusing Outputs for Awareness: Opponents view citing an LLM's self-reported probability of consciousness (e.g., asking a model if it is conscious and analyzing its reply) as a fundamental misunderstanding of next-token prediction, treating sophisticated pattern matching as genuine internal experience. #AI #LLMs #consciousness

I love the kinds of questions they explore in this video. What is real? What only seems real? And is what we call reality just our brain’s best interpretation of the world? https://youtu.be/McHEDgBrN7w?is=itgLxgor-yrJH4Gd #Reality #Perception #Consciousness #Vsauce #Curiosity #Science #Mindfulness

The latest neural network models are brilliant at mimicking aspects of cognition, but mistaking that for explaining consciousness is like confusing a weather simulation with the storm itself. We still lack even a theory of how subjective experience arises from computation. #neuroscience #consciousness #AI

@gusseting@mastodon.social @toxi@mastodon.thi.ng @JulianOliver@mastodon.social @mattsheffield@mastodon.social @crowgirl@hachyderm.io I don't think it is Richard Dawkins being neuro diverse, I think it is the majority missing the point, not really addressing the concepts involved. Dawkins didn't actually conclude #ai is #conscious as the headlines say, it's more like he was saying you cannot tell the difference. What is the definition of #consciousness anyway? nobody knows.

"The Hard Problem of Consciousness" hasn't been solved because it's the wrong question. We need to be working on "The Hard Problem of Matter." #physics #quantum #science #consciousness https://zachperlman.substack.com/p/the-hard-problem-of-matter
