Oopsie, this didn't turn out the way Winston had planned it, eh?! Government accepts all Covid-19 inquiry's recommendations 'in some form' https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/829095/government-accepts-all-covid-19-inquiry-s-recommendations-in-some-form Of course, the interesting part is how well and when all these recommendations will be implemented. As a #CleanAir advocate, the response to improvement of ventilation in both healthcare facilities and public buildings leaves heaps to wish for. This excerpt from the actual report demonstrates that not enough is going to be done to make an impact in the near future: "Ventilation: Health NZ currently applies a risk-based approach to ventilation focused on high-priority clinical areas in both general and specialist hospitals. Health NZ has also incorporated contemporary ventilation and IPC standards, is increasing the percentage of single rooms (and negative pressure rooms) in new hospital and health facility builds and major redevelopments (23), maintains hospital ventilation systems, and uses air reticulation and filters where required, alongside making continuing improvements to IPC programmes and guidance. Under the Building Act 2004, new buildings (both public and private) must meet the Building Code, which includes ventilation requirements (24). Existing buildings are not required to meet new or amended requirements when the Building Code changes. MBIE is currently developing options for proposed changes to ventilation requirements in the Building Code compliance documents, including the adoption of up-to-date standards, for its 2028 update. Benefits and costs of options will be considered prior to public consultation." We had 6 years to adopt clean air standards We had 6 years to normalize masking Society chose denial instead Now as wildfires rage & the air turns to poison … people are left unprotected Covid cautious folks are still trying to protect those who’ve ignored them for years We are still trying to arm people with the tools they need to keep themselves and their families healthy. We’re handing out N95s. We’re supporting mask blocs. We’re teaching people how to build corsi Rosenthal boxes. We’re educating about the health risks of wildfire We’re still fighting to help anyone who will listen. We’ve been left by the wayside, but we haven’t given up. Everyone is at risk from wildfire smoke. Everyone. You can’t choose to not breathe. We share the air and we need to start caring about the quality of that air. Invest in good quality respirators. Get air purifiers for your home. Support clean air groups in your neighborhood. Hand out masks to the unhoused and those who can’t escape the elements. No one is coming to save us. We must show up and save each other. #wildfires #cleanair #climate #climatechange #n95 #COVIDisAirborne #covidisnotover

#DIY box fan filters – #CorsiRosenthal box "Also known as a Corsi-Rosenthal box, this DIY method of building your own air filter with #MERV13 furnace filters and a box fan are an easy and cost-effective way to help clear indoor air from airborne virus particles, wildfire smoke, pollen, dust, and more! If you can seal a box, you can build one (or 100!) of these!" https://cleanaircrew.org/box-fan-filters/ #OpenSource #CleanAir #CleanAirCrew #WildfireSmoke #WildfireHaze #AQI #AirQuality #ClimateDiary #WildfireSeason #Wildfires #HEPAFilters #CorsiRosenthalBox

This is really bare bones because I haven't done the usual outreach I do to get it updated, but I have a Wildfire Smoke Resources doc for the US (I would like to expand it to Canada but I'd need help!) where you can get information about where to find free masks, air filters and air purifiers, and safe places to go to get out of smoky air, as well as general resources about wildfire smoke and how to protect yourself: https://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/view/4Mi5umUBZUCSIt7qA6kMSiZK5ZoTntWUlSXkJ9y1ZhU/ If you have a mask block or other resource for free masks or clean air in your area, let me know! You can message me here or use the form that's linked in the doc. tagspam below #Wildfire #Wildfires #WildfireSmoke #ClimateChange #Solarpunk #Canada #CanadianWildfires #MaskBloc #CleanAir #AirPollution #MaskUp #StillMasking #YallMasking

Written back when the #US #EPA cared about #CleanAir! Do-It-Yourself #AirCleaners: Making Cleaner Air More Accessible Published September 6, 2023 "Everyone should have the right to breathe clean air. However, during wildfires, the cost and availability of clean air technologies and reliable power sources can create challenges for people trying to protect their health from wildfire smoke. Recognizing these barriers, EPA and other health, environmental, and nonprofit organizations have provided instructions and materials for creating do-it-yourself (#DIY) air cleaners. DIY air cleaners are a more affordable and accessible alternative to commercial versions and can be constructed using a box fan and a high-efficiency home air filter. Securing the filter to the fan creates an effective, simple air cleaning system. "This DIY solution filters out smoke particles and improves indoor air quality, but its use has raised key questions about the devices’ safety and effectiveness. EPA scientists and their colleagues are conducting research to answer these questions. " 'This research was highly anticipated, particularly by EPA’s western regions, who have suffered from terrible wildfire smoke for years without the ability to recommend more affordable air filtering options to the public,' noted Meredith Bauer, Assistant Director of EPA Region 9’s Air and Radiation Division. 'It is important that we develop tools that allow everyone to protect themselves and their families when wildfire smoke is in the air.' Worried about the shrinking #GreatSaltLake? Me, too. #utpol #Utahns claim they care. If so, where's the money for these programs to reduce #SLC air pollution? Air pollution directly increases the snow melt and heat in the valley. #Utah #CleanAir #PublicTransportation https://utahnewsdispatch.com/2026/07/14/two-salt-lake-city-transportation-programs-cut-hive-pass-green-parking/

New introduction post - joined in Nov 2022 (as many did) and back now after a hiatus. I write about Covid, disability justice, ableism, eugenics, the experience of being chronically ill during a pandemic and life, loss and grief. #CovidisNotOver #MaskUp #CleanAir #LongCovid

And here’s the part people miss: dose matters. The more virus you inhale, the higher your risk. Masks reduce that exposure, and when both people mask, protection compounds. So no, it’s not that “masks don’t work.” It’s that not all masks, or how they’re used, work the same. "while cities usually start by tackling air pollution in the most affluent areas, Bogotá started rolling out clean air zones – zonas urbanas por un mejor aire (Zumas), or urban zones for better air – in the most polluted, such as Bosa, one of Bogotá’s poorest neighbourhoods and, critically, one of the main routes into the centre." ‘Clean air should not be a privilege’: how Bogotá is tackling air pollution in its poorest areas | Air pollution | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/jan/29/bogota-air-pollution-poorest-areas-zuma #CleanAir
