Do we have any Latin scholars here who can tell me what the Latin word is for "carob"? Various online dictionaries are coming up blank, but I know they had carob trees and pods around then and that they were in some sort of use so there must be language for that. https://www.jstor.org/stable/4254221 #Classics #Latin #History #Carob #Food

Hi everyone, thought I'd make my first post here about my love of old books. I love original or close to original spelling. And one of the wonders of the internet is that I don't need to be rich or have access to an academic library to get such. There's so many free and legal databases. Currently reading Hypolitus by Madame d'Aulnoy, bound with a version of Macbeth and possibly a version of The Tale of Two Lovers by Pope Pius II. #books #bookstadon #classics

Franklyn Cicero is the name of Giancarlo Esposito's character, the symbol of the old guard: erudite (like the real Cicero) but corrupt. Was the historical Cicero corrupt? Corruption was pretty normal in Roman Republican politics but Cicero was reckoned to be unusually honest for a Roman. Perhaps someone who actually remembers their #Classics education could tell me. Ugh I'm already starting to get an idea of what Megalopolis is all about... I'm having difficulty choosing words while Catilina (Adam Driver) walks on scaffolding. Haha.

40 years ago, but still such a classic. It's still amazing to this day that they made a movie in which the swaggering white dude was the incompetent comedic sidekick and yet managed to convince everyone he was the hero.
