hi all 👋 this is a #Canberra-based post about a kids in #STEM programme, apologies for the wall of text if that’s not relevant to you 😬 does anyone know any Canberra (or surrounds) kids in grades 7-10 who are interested in STEM & would like to join a #LEGO #robotics team? I’m volunteering with a Canberra team participating in the FIRST LEGO League Challenge (FIRST = “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”, it’s not the first one 🤪) the various programmes are broken out into age ranges – info about this particular one (the “challenge” level) is on their website at https://www.firstaustralia.org/first-lego-league-challenge although their website is super confusing & unhelpful unless you already know exactly what you’re looking for this team meets on Sundays in Acton from 11:00-14:00 with the skills building running through until mid-November & then there’s a regional competition in Wollongong on 14th November so if you know anyone who has kids in the right age range that might find this interesting, pls pass on the info & DM me if anyone wants to join or have a chat (pls no personal details, we’ll switch to Signal after an initial DM). I’d especially love to get some more girls & enby folks involved, but the team welcomes all genders I’ve been asked to make it super-duper clear that this is not LEGO Masters – apparently they’ve had a couple of kids come along in previous years only to bail after a few weeks when they didn’t get to build LEGO Masters style stuff 🙃 anyone who’s interested in learning some coding (Python using PyBricks), engineering, & problem-solving while learning about biodiversity (this year’s theme), teamwork, & planning might be a good fit thx all, pls share with anyone who might have or know kids in or near Canberra who would be interested 🙏 #KidsInSTEM #GirlsInSTEM #EnbiesInSTEM

Minus 3.5 C but feels like minus 6 for this morning's walk. Nice sunny day ahead by the look of it though. #canberra

Hey #solar power enthusiasts of #Australia and/or #Canberra, how big a system (ballpark) would you expect a household of 2 people to have? I've just been quoted $18-20k for a system with 9kW of panels and either a 9 or an 18kWh battery and that sounds like A Lot for a little townhouse. My power bill spreadsheet says I use about 18kW/day of power during winter (11-12 in summer), and that's before I add the insulation I've also been quoted on so I expect that to drop dramatically.

@futzle@old.mermaid.town Gregory's was my family's go to directory in the Sydney suburbs. When we moved here, the Gregory's Canberra edition was so gloriously petite that I could easily slip it into my handbag. So useful for discovering my way in a new area when out and about on foot. #Gregorys #Sydney #Canberra

Local news... but today I suddenly learned what happened with the Gungahlin Football Club. What a god damned mess. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-10-18/gungahlin-united-fc-fold-capital-football-licence-revoke/105907530 #Canberra

Lovely morning at Mawson with Andrew Braddock, Sam Carter, and my friend Emad. And I’ve run out of flyers thanks to some very pleasant post-stall letterboxing on this fine Sunday. If you also want to see north Tuggeranong and south Woden friends jump on light rail from Mawson park & ride or bike & ride, reducing cars on the road by thousands more each day, you can sign the petition here: https://epetitions.parliament.act.gov.au/details/e-pet-081-25 #actpol #trains #canberra

I've had the window open most of this afternoon. Not something one can usually do in May in #Canberra .

Hey #Australia / #Canberra specifically, what's the go with new water heaters these days? I've just discovered my 170L gas one is over 33 years old at this point (what a champ) and I'm thinking about replacing it pre-emptively. The current one can't quite fill my bathtub before getting tepid, I like the idea of an instant system but would a modern gas one the same size be better? Do I want a heat pump unit? The ACT has another couple decades to go with gas and I don't have solar anything yet.
