60+ three-time immigrant, whose life in Africa, Australia, and America, work with industrial and medical quality & safety, and obsession with mortality data and accidents, results in morbid short stories.

I write fiction #shortstories that are like “Final Destination” meets “The Monkey’s Paw” (W. W. Jacobs, 1902). A little bit Poe, a touch of Dahl, and a hint of Gorey.

When I am not writing, I do bare-bow archery, walk a husky, and pick up other people's litter.

Periodic reminder to #comic #artists #narrators #poets #voiceactors etc. if you are struggling to find a plot, you are welcome to borrow one from my latest collection of #shortstories

You don't have to pay me or even add a link to the book, although it would be nice if you mentioned me

#ScribesAndMakers 4/17. What's something you've learned in recent research?

My own? Just other research I found interesting?
I mean, under my other profile I have two day jobs doing different kinds of research. In the one program, I am just amazed at how little states are doing to prepare for shocks. In the other, I am amazed at how patients are forced to build bridges between institutional silos

In other people's research - I am just blown away by how poorly we handled COVID-19, and STILL not

@sundogplanets Hi Prof. Yes... but In the moment, it often really really really LOOKS like I have more experience in X, and like how would I know? Asking someone if they need help is also fraught and often gets the "are you fucking kidding me? OF COURSE I NEED HELP!" However, yes, mansplaining is rife, irritating, and actually kinda abusive, and I am happy to balance my quandary by just getting yelled at occasionally for being slow to help

I could bang on a lot more about questionnaire design and just how dumb these "calculators" are, or just how ignorant about basic psychology, physiology, and sociology these influencers are, but meh, that should already be clear from what I said. I could talk more about female psychopaths, which is a REALLY interesting topic, but that is best for a different thread. Last thought: don't treat women like they are a prize for playing the game right. They are people. They aren't goods to win end

Out of the melee of trying things, you are going to have fun, grow as a person, and discover what you ACTUALLY like. You are also likely to suddenly be stopped in your tracks by your unconscious brain which will twist your head around and gape at someone, and everything in your body is going to focus at once and scream "WAIT ... WHO IS THAT!!!" It may also be a psychopath who intends to bury you in an unmarked grave, but it is far more likely to be someone you can have a really nice life with

SO If you want to find a mate, focus first on just finding friends and finding you. Go to where people do things. Try a lot of different things. Join people who help at a hospice, join a group of birdwatchers, meet up with people who make birdhouses, whatever, get out try stuff. Go back to places where what they do fascinates you and fills you with joy or a sense of purpose. Make friends with women - not to "score", but just to be a friend Be friendly, be helpful, be reliable, be SAFE

Not your monkey Here's the thing. Do you know what you want from a relationship? Do you know who YOU are? Do you know what actually makes you happy? You might look at the ads and think that that "hot babe" draped across the Lambo is what you want, but even if she was real, *which she isn't, she represents a lifestyle that is empty, wasteful, parasitical, and ultimately soul-destroying. You would be so unhappy that you would start thinking about death *Watch this ad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYhCn0jf46U

If you “lookmax” your face, train yourself on all these superficial bullet points, and see women as a kind of prize for playing the game right, you are that oaf who blows the call, and you are going to attract two kinds of women

  • game players, who will eventually leave you because you aren’t actually that guy in the ad
  • psychopaths, who will fleece you for everything you have, and either leave you a mental wreck, or leave you in a shallow grave

If that’s your goal, who am I to stop you

@sentientsponge You can usefully split these guys (and gals) into three types

  1. The Influencer/entrepreneurs who are creating stupid “calculators” that unsurprisingly tell you that you need work, and then offer to sell you advice or products
  2. The Influencer/monetizers who earn money from clicks and ads and tell you how shitty women are, how inferior you are in their eyes, and how you are done in
  3. The rubes who are the targets of both and are just insecure guys who are struggling

So, your favorite Manosphere Influencer might, in his tedious ignorance, have listed these things you are supposed to match up to, but real women in real in-person situations in which you actually are, are reading thousands of other signals emanating from your body and possessions. While you are trying to sell her on your list of manosphere points that she is supposed to comply with, she is evaluating in realtime things that aren't on that list at all, and WORSE, your brain is doing the SAME

60+ three-time immigrant, whose life in Africa, Australia, and America, work with industrial and medical quality & safety, and obsession with mortality data and accidents, results in morbid short stories. I write fiction # shortstories that are like “Final Destination” meets “The Monkey’s Paw” (W. W. Jacobs, 1902). A little bit Poe, a touch of Dahl, and a hint of Gorey. This is one reason why online dating is such a mess Humans are stinky, twitchy, and noisy creatures, and that data streams from them like a fucking DELUGE. You think your gaming PC is fast and devours data? My Dude, your body is non-stop streaming petabytes of data every second There is stuff going on with your pupils, mouth, and eyes that are fast and furious. Your face is buzzing with microexpressions that flit in and out in less than a blink of an eye There is world of in-person signaling

So, let's just dwell on this unconscious processing and data dense environment thing If you sat and wrote down the top ten things you find hot and are looking for, you are probably going to be about 90% wrong. That's because the deliberative and conscious part of your brain doesn't usually have a fucking clue what the rest of the brain is up to. Think of the conscious you as more the PR department than the operations room. It explains what you did after the fact, making up plausible reasons

OK number two thing We all "value signal" How we speak, when we speak, what we say, how we stand, walk, eat, buy, are all social signals. Who we make friends with, the jokes we tell, the jokes we laugh at, what we wear, how we wear it, when we wear it, why we wear it, are all social signals. Who you find attractive and who finds you attractive is a fuzzy calculation made MAINLY by unconscious processing in parts of your brain that you know very little about, based on an information-dense feed

But before we move on, let me just point out the BIGGEST flaw in all this SWM bullshit Women aren't robots They aren't passive algorithms that scan your fucking SWM barcode and spit out affection They are living, breathing, thinking INDIVIDUALS with their own issues, situations, ideas, goals, and preferences, and no SWM calculator is going to tell them what to do. Your high or low "score" means fuckall to them, and they aren't likely to give a damn. They aren't shopping for an SWM scorecard

Let's just consider that these questionnaires, scores, ratings, and sweat and worry, ignore the most BASIC of all things about how people ACTUALLY pair up, and that is PROXIMITY It is called the "girl next door" phenomenon. Not literally, but decades and decades of research show that people tend to hook up with people they meet frequently. That's why so many people who got together met at school, at work, at church, etc. Leaving the BIGGEST factor out means the rest of the score is bullshit

But it gets dumber Not only would SMV borrowed from evopsy be a really bad fit for trying to get a girlfriend, but the way these Influencers are doing it is both agonizingly cringy, and stupefyingly incompetent. They focus on the wrong things to measure (because they sucked it out of their thumbs and have fuckall scientific training), and they they operationalize them into questions that are clumsy, stupid, and motheaten They dwell mainly on: -Age -Money -Height -Body -Face -Grooming -Status

Firstly, you copy concepts from evolutionary psychology at your great peril. Manosphere influencers eager to make a buck are happy to grab a DESCRIPTIVE construct from evopsy and hammer it into a different shaped hole of PREDICTIVE or even worse a PRESCRIPTIVE rule A constructed view of how mate selection occurred in GENERAL in centuries and millennia past, is not at all a practical or effective way to predict how YOU will get a suitable mate NOW and HERE Those are entirely different things

*sigh*

Ok, I thought I was done with "Old guy gives life advice to young'uns" but apparently not, because "sexual market value"

A ton of young men are getting all bent out of sorts over their "SMV" as calculated by a flotilla of grifters who offer "detailed advice" on how to increase it to have hot girls simply hurl themselves at one

I am here to tell them three things

1. The new SMV thing is dumb
2. Attraction is about social signaling, but not like they say
3. This is not your monkey

@broadwaybabyto A sizable slice of those are people who believe in the "Prosperity Doctrine" or Right-wing Christianity, or the people like Oprah who believe in "Attraction Theory" and that mere thoughts and positive energy shape reality. So, they think that as "good people" who give out positive thoughts, they will never be without a home. They also tend to believe the same foolishness about things like cancer, and are astounded when they get a diagnosis and face surgery, chemo, or death

Lev has convinced me to add one more

  1. The universe, this world, societies, and individuals (especially women) do not owe you respect, recognition, responses, or a point-by-point refutation or rebuttal of your opinions.

When I am not writing, I do bare-bow archery, walk a husky, and pick up other people's litter. # writer # author # fiction

If you have enjoyed or found these useful, maybe consider reading my short stories or books, and consider leaving a review. About half of my shorts are available for free at Physician's Weekly, my eBooks are on Kobo, and my paperbacks are orderable at most any bookseller. My novels are mostly about endearingly psychopathic girls. First read the free chapters, though. My fiction is as pithy, but has far more murder and amusingly fatal accidents

  1. Consider a great many patently foolish and ludicrously risky things. I’m not saying DO them, because that would mostly be foolish, but CONSIDER them. Consider joining the SAS, being a supermodel, driving a formula-1 racing car, competing in the Isle of Mann TT, being a Michelin Star chef. Think through what it would take, would be like, and what it would likely cost in blood and money

Explore them, deeply feel them, and for the most part, thank fuck you won’t ever do them. Learn about you

  1. On the whole, women have had a raw deal for the entire history of the species, and the reason you aren’t getting as much physical attention or getting a great job or a nice house is not their fault. Be nice to women without expecting to be compensated for it. They have more than enough shit on their plate, so be understanding and helpful, and try not to get in the way or make things worse for them

Make more women friends, you might be surpised at how nice that is

Also, women aren’t a prize

  1. You don’t have to “leave a mark”, “go down in history”, and you sure as shit won’t “put a ding in the universe”. Just be a person, live your life being as helpful as you can, and enjoy what you can of the journey. 100% of those remembered by history weren’t much like the history, and everyone is much more Ozymandius than King Arthur

The universe is one fucking huge and weird place, and a million Steve Jobs holding hands in a chain would neither be noticeable to the universe, nor interesting

  1. There are no exclusively “masculine” jobs or pastimes, and you will enjoy life far more if you give that whole story the middle finger.

If you like Barbie Dolls, cooking, or knitting, fucking go for it. Don’t let some narrow-minded and insecure scold put you off your thing. Do your thing, mix with others who do thing, and help the less skilled do thing. If you sucked at thing but enjoyed it, master small slices of it, and show others how you did that and how you fuck up. You can be that guy

  1. Trying to BE an “alpha” is an exhausting, fruitless, time suck. People who actually are leaders are typically stressed, exhausted, and miserable, and find out that their actual power is very narrow and always comes at a steep price. Rather just be a comfortable and useful “beta”. In fact, be a fucking delta and use the spare time to be useful and do things YOU enjoy. Let other overzealous morons bash their lives apart on the crags of merciless fortune

Rather learn to juggle, whistle, or cook

  1. The “Alpha Male” schtick is a leaky bag of bullshit on stilts. There is no science behind this, it doesn’t survive a scrutiny, and the guys who claim the title are always insecure, overcompensating, grifters. Always.

It is also obviously bullshit. You can’t possibly be top dog in everything, and the more you are top dog in anything, the narrower that specialty will be, and the shorter the time before someone better comes along. All that trumpeting actually tells you he’s an insecure numpty

  1. The “rugged individualist” loner myth, is just that. Hardly anything gets done by individuals. Even the most individual creative occupations, like painters, sculptors, poets, inventors, writers, hardly EVER do their stuff in isolation. Even the grumpiest fucker, like Newton, collaborated, and ALL the big discoveries and inventions involved a lot of collaboration and exchanges of ideas

Next time some guy wants to sell you on the idea on lonerdom, know for sure it’s a scam. It’s always a scam

  1. Physical strength is overrated. The dude with the six-pack, massive biceps, and thickest neck, is still a thin-skinned animal without fangs, scales, stinger, or horns, who couldn’t even outrun a crocodile, let alone any of the big cats. An ape half his body mass is more than twice as strong.

Humans are half blind, half deaf, weaklings, and the weediest person wielding a stone-age spear, can put the biggest muscleman in the grave with minimal fuss.

The weakest woman can squeeze a trigger

  1. Most “Heroes” are just selfish and insecure arseholes. Write down 10 guys who are supposeldly big heroes, and then actually research them. Eight of them will turn out to be total shitheads - greedy, selfish, and pompous fucknuts, and also mostly sex pests

Ergo. Stop looking for heroes, and immediately be suspicious of anyone who claims to be or who other people say is a big hero. This counts for almost exactly 100% of online influencers. They are 100% flogging you scams and grifts and lies

  1. Sex is far less important than the media, buddies, influencers, and society would have you believe. It’s also a fucking time trap. Especially when you are young, your body and society scream at you to want to be in rut all the damn time. It’s exhausting. It also steals time and energy from windsurfing, riding a motorcycle, making curry, and brewing beer - which are all more fun, cost less, and don’t involve all the fuss and bother.

Make friends with more women, just bc they are interesting

  1. Sissyphus was a stupid allegory.

Doing something useless, and especially for which you get no praise, is not as soul destroying as people would have you believe. If you like rolling a rock up a hill and having it roll back down, it’s actually huge fucking fun if you just embrace the irony and the fun of rolling a rock, building up a sweat, and then letting that sucker go tumbling down.

Corollary: you don’t actually need praise. Just enjoy what you do, and try to do it well

As an almost 70 year old man, I have some advice for young men.

Please boost this if you think it will help

  1. Your voice doesn’t need to be heard. In fact, realizing that you don’t HAVE to have an opinion on everything and voice opinions or ideas in meetings or social gatherings, is amazingly liberating. You can actually just shut up, and relieve yourself of all that effort and stress. Let Bob utter his embarrassingly dumb idea, let Shirley have a say. You can just let it be for the most part
