WTF MS Office??? I have Powerpoint* files which looked perfectly fine last week and all of a sudden, spaces have disappeared from headings! I've had to change the font theme for it to work again, but apparently I cannot use Work Sans SemiBold anymore!
*: My employer's choice, not mine!

@danirabbit the University where I work has decided to offer free fentanyl to staff and students, because Dario the drug dealer says his mob is more ethical and his product supposedly has fewer negative side effects. Yet, despite all the money we give him, our students prefer to get their drugs from that guy Sam on the street.

Imagine being a lecturer and thinking there's no artistry in developing, adjusting, and delivering your classes.
One thing I particularly hate about synthetic text extruders is their seemingly amazing ability to "square the circle" of impossible briefs that have conflicting requirements, instead of pushing back. We create (learning) experiences that seem to balance the needs of everyone, but once you start looking in a little bit of detail they fall apart under the weight of their contradictions.

The problem is, that according to my boss, learning how to use AI is what we should be teaching.
I seriously consider resigning – that might be the only ethical choice I have rather than stay in a college that has decided to go full-in on AI. But teaching jobs are scarce (and I might have the same issues elsewhere). And moving to industry would mean working in tech, and even there I probably wouldn't be able to find anything senior.
What I hate with my employer's embrace of AI is not only that we're robbing them from opportunities to learn, but we're also robbing them from the joy of learning. What a sad sad effect from something that is supposedly an unavoidable neutral tool that we must teach our students to use.
I'm often surprised by how British and Dutch urban planning can be so similar on some points (neighbourhoods of terraced or semi-detached houses, town centres that are half-street, half-mall), but the fact that English town centres are often surrounded by a moat of car parks and hostile to bicycles and pedestrians makes a big difference.

@aral@mastodon.ar.al this is the case for so much more than coding and this is a massive issue for me as an educator. "AI literacy" is an illusion because the only way of "critically assessing" the output of AI is to be extremely experienced AND cautious (I've seen experienced people lose all critical thinking), yet we tell students "just do some due diligence"

@timnitGebru oh yes the ethical alternative who does so much for education that they erm… gave us access to their free elearning module about how to use one's discernment and due diligence to become "AI fluent" (not "literate", that would set the bar too high). BTW, I completed the elearning in 2 minutes using the age-old heuristic of "the longest answer in a multiple choice questionnaire is probably correct".
