@hongminhee the way to fix this is through adversarial compatibility: make fedi clients that extend twitter, crosspost, and allow you to follow both users on twitter and on the rest of fedi. then these clients are strictly more powerful than twitter alone, giving an incentive to switch while subverting the network effect
of course, this breaks the twitter ToS and isn't "ideologically pure", so lots of fedi advocates will be too scared to do it

@Daojoan my model of this phenomenon is that all these people are downstream of the basic failure of their ethics to tell them that the redistribution of money is zero-sum, and so "passive income", like all other forms of profit through owning capital rather than laboring, is simply theft
but capitalism doesn't acknowledge this, so it pushes people into the purest forms of rent extraction and scamming

@elb@social.sdf.org I typically use this to teach the zeroth law of distributed systems: avoid building one if at all possible. DNS is a great example, where if people are willing to compromise on global agreement on names (just like there isn't one globally agreed-upon "jeff"), then you no longer need a distributed system and can instead use something like petnames, emulating how folks refer to non-computer things (and how folks named computers on internetworks before DNS)
