@ottercynical @lproven Other tablet operating systems are available. ;-) I do something similar now with my "work phone", which isn't provisioned with mobile service.

@lproven @ottercynical I don't think OnePlus is a thing here. I've thought about buying a (non-Android) flip phone with hotspot support and tethering a tablet through that. Main Android apps I would miss are Organic Maps and my bus pass.

@ottercynical @lproven Perhaps it depends where you live. Are there certain makes and models to look for?

My "work phone" is now old enough that my real phone will no longer let it tether via #Bluetooth.

@blainsmith We did try Debian on my son's computer but it didn't work and the #debian people on Libera weren't helpful.

@pleia2@floss.social I doubt I'll ever get to work on IBM mainframe, midrange or storage systems again professionally but I did manage to SYSGEN and IPL an emulated System/3.

@pleia2@floss.social Yes, I don't count my midrange experience as mainframe. I just meant that a lot of what we take for granted doesn't apply in i, z, etc. I tweaked the wording to make the distinction more clear.

@pleia2@floss.social I've spent very little time on mainframes. On midrange I remember how i5/OS (now IBM i, formerly OS/400), challenged my firmly-held ideas about terminals (no glass teletype!), filesystems (wait, the database goes all the way down?) and so on. I worked with it long enough to get somewhat comfortable though (F3 F3 F3...) #ibmi
