Looking forward to answers here, there is a path running north from the stadium along the top of the creek levi that is splitting, they keep putting tar in the cracks to the point where I’m thinking a full suspension MTB bike might be the best way to traverse it. I’m not even clear who I would complain to. #BikeNite

(About 10 lbs out of 70 for my road bike, about the same out of 40 for adventure/utility bike). The road bike does that overnight, the other bike doesn’t get ridden as much. #BikeNite

For hot, but not too hot, plenty of water, electrolytes, food. We live in a desert climate out here, so humidity is rarely a factor, so jump in a fountain of you find one! #BikeNite

@enobacon@urbanists.social I haven’t figured out the brake arm yet, but I did score a pair of Problem Solvers Trave Agents, and that helps tremendously. Not on par with my hydrolic disk brakes on the other bike, but I think it solves the mushiness.

@enobacon@urbanists.social They are adjustable, with a screw to adjust spring tension and the three holes on the post. Originally I had them all on the middle hole, but the return was not a much as I wanted so I moved them to the top hole (greatest tension), but then one of the arms apparently "failed" it still works, but a lot less tension, for that brake, I have the failed arm in the high tension hole and the working arm in the medium hole. Balances better (the screw on the failed arm does not change the tension). I don't see a way to disassemble the arm to see what is going on inside (other than destroying it). They are Promax P-1 108mm arms. the 85mm arms I think would be just a few mm to short and the brake cable would rub on the tire. #BikeNite

@enobacon@urbanists.social The stem is from my other bike, which was the wrong size (was too long and on that bike it was angled down), but I figured it was a good starting point. I think I can tighten up the brakes a little bit, but the return springs are not working well, I don't really understand why, the brakes are only about 5 years old. One arm in particular just has almost no tension. I'll also look into moving the bars up some. I have big enough hands, so reach is not a problem. Unfortunately problem solvers doesn't sell their pulley thing anymore, so I need to find some pre-owned ones (I did run across a single one once). #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A8. I “finished” rebuilding my old bike, so a bike photo this week. I’m mostly happy with the results, I need a procure a new stem to bring the handlebars up and back a little. The shifting is not quite right, so I need to figure that out. And short pull bar shifters with long pull brakes, so kinda mushy braking, so I still need to figure that out. I knew this would be an issue, but the Microshift Sword brakes claim to have a 1.5 pull ratio, so I was hoping it would be better. Oh and the steering is a little twitchy, which I think will be better with the handle bars higher and closer. #BikeNite

I rotate them about once a month, which is more than 300km, but generally less than 400 (when I notice that it has gotten noisier). I run the chain through a rag after every ride and haven’t bothered to do any extra cleaning before they go back in the pot. It’s been fine. But I don’t ride in muck and seldom on wet streets.

@ascentale @eq @bikenite A5. Wax. I now have two bikes with waxed chains, I won’t go back. I do understand that wax doesn’t do as well in the wet, but I don’t have that problem. I’ve had to put the chain back on a few times, only mildly waxy fingers! #BikeNite

@ascentale @kimu @v_perjorative @bikenite A4. Personally I think the frame defines the bike. I spent the day putting new components on my ‘91 yellow Trek, which I call the Trek. When it rolls again (maybe tomorrow?) the original parts will be the frame, the fork and the quick release skewers. The brakes, seat post and saddle were replaced in the last few years and get to stay. #BikeNite

@semitones @michael_w_busch Starlink works by sending your signal to orbit, then perhaps to another satellite and then back to the earth, where it then travels over fiber to the rest of the internet. Everything has a bandwidth, basically how much data can be at a time. Think of it like pipes, the bigger the diameter the more bandwidth. The connection to your house may be small, but only you are using it. The connection between internet nodes is much bigger, but many people are using it. Satellite bandwidth is much smaller than fiber or even, copper wire. A radio signal is just less efficient. To get more bandwidth, you need more satellites, many, many more. But then more users, so more satellites…

@semitones @michael_w_busch Latency is basically distance. The farther between two points the longer it takes to travel between them. The latency between two computers in your home will be very low almost instant, the latency to the moon is 1.24 seconds. (International phone calls still have a noticeable pause, but much less than when we used to send the signal to geosynchronous satellites).
