The saga of the slavery exhibit on Independence Mall in Philadelphia continues. I've written before about how powerful and important I found this to be when it went up. We were down there yesterday and citizens have replaced the removed panels with photocopied versions taped on the wall. Plus background of the battle over the site in many languages, along with hand-written "They can't erase our history." Rock on, Philadelphia #resist https://whyy.org/articles/philadelphia-presidents-house-court-ruling-replace-exhibit-trump/

I joined a gym a few weeks ago, the first time since having kids. My time is still extremely constrained, but I've committed to going at least once a week. It's not much. It's not "enough". But it's better than nothing.

Last day of the Expo at the Red Hat Summit in Atlanta! Artem, Carolyn and I have been holding down the fort, and we even snuck in some IBM LinuxONE stickers and screen/lens cleaners to give away 🐧 Come visit if you're here!

In Atlanta for the Red Hat Summit!

Our little IBM LinuxONE section of the IBM booth has been set up with the laptop and goodies I brought and now I have some free time to go say hello to people 😀 Hello!

I can't bring a full size IBM LinuxONE 5 to the Red Hat Summit this year, so I had to improvise with something that will fit in my luggage 😁

Behold!

A Lego Telum II (totally unofficial, designed by the great Devonte' Hawkins)

Instructions: https://community.ibm.com/community/user/viewdocument/unofficial-ibm-telum-ii-lego-instru

And a 3D printed LinuxONE 5!

STL files here: https://community.ibm.com/community/user/viewdocument/z17-3d-printable-scale-model

Next stop: Atlanta!

Our au pair is on vacation, so my husband and I have been tag-teaming elementary school drop-off.

Yesterday:

Kid 1: "You have a Hello Kitty shirt! Look, I have Hello Kitty pants!"

Kid 2: "My sister has has a Hello Kitty shirt!"

My kid: "My mom has Hello Kitty pajamas!"

Yes, yes, I do.

Today I wore an Animal Crossing shirt and had a nice chat with a 4th grader about our favorite things in the game 😂 (though Dreamlight Valley is currently my thing, can't resist Disney)

Work has been nuts, I didn't sleep enough last night, the house is a mess.

So obviously the right thing to do tonight was set up the new propane fire pit that we ordered over the weekend and arrived today 🔥 And toast marshmallows.

But I am really tired 😅

Super excited to share that the GitHub Actions runner that we host for IBM Z, LinuxONE, and Power is now in GitHub Marketplace.

We're easier to find now!

https://community.ibm.com/community/user/blogs/elizabeth-k-joseph1/2026/05/06/ibm-z-linuxone-and-power-in-github-marketplace

It may seem like a simple thing, but there were probably a dozen people over MONTHS involved in making this happen.

Special thanks to @jjasghar@mastodon.social for guidance he's provided and our regular "update this, try that, can you help with...?" meetings 😁

(Previously it was a standalone "app" that we had to point people to.)

The IBM Spyre AI Accelerator is the latest bit of shiny to land for the generation of mainframes released last year (IBM z17 and LinuxONE 5).

I finally got to play with one at one of our labs!

We're demoing it at our booth at the Red Hat Summit in Atlanta next week along with a hands-on activity. Just putting the finishing touches on the laptop I'm setting up ✨

The toilet in the bathroom for my home office has been broken since August. It's not the biggest deal, we have 4 bathrooms, but yesterday we finally got it replaced!

Now that it's back I'm reminded of dozens of mild inconveniences it caused for everyone. It's nice to have it back 😁

@lopta@mastodon.social Well, if you ever did want to have some fun on a Linux on Z box, my team runs a free service that provides temporary VMs to the community: https://community.ibm.com/zsystems/l1cc/

But it is just Linux at the end of the day, logging in for the first time was a little anticlimactic for me after I ran lscpu and cat /proc/cpuinfo

So I wrote some instructions for playing games: https://github.com/linuxone-community-cloud/arcade (yeah, it runs Doom)

@oddhack@mstdn.social I haven't used RMS, but in the case of things like ISPF it's always fun for me when people are shocked by new/different features 😄 ISPF may have roots that go back to 1974, but it's still updated based on client feedback alongside IBM z/OS, which had a release back in September. ISPF even got new a service in that release!

@lopta@mastodon.social I had to laugh at "the database goes all the way down" because it's such a great way of putting it 😂 (And sorry to be That Guy, but i5/OS technically ran on midrange servers that were Power-based, they may have looked like washing machines, but mainframes were a lot bigger 😅 Even today, IBM Power servers can be shipped as blades, and the smallest IBM Z mainframe is 20U and requires a specific lift to install it in the rack).

Just as a follow-up to this, I laugh about this different environment, but I actually love working in these spaces, and engaging with the teams on how we can make things easier For instance, did you know Ansible can run JCL? Yup. Cool 😎 If anyone does want a taste of this, there's a free IBM Z Xplore platform that gets you an account and guides you through the basics of key tools in the mainframe world: https://ibmzxplore.influitive.com/ (and do the optional Linux module, I helped write it!)

I was on a call today that mentioned a blog post by Marianne Bellotti (author book "Kill it with Fire" 🔥) about writing some COBOL on IBM z/OS via ISPF, and it goes into detail about what I tend to condense into "Mainframes work differently than systems most folks are familiar with today."

Datasets, JCL, weird format requirements, and why can't I just create a file!?

And it's funny, I had a good chuckle at "JCL on first glance is a gobbledygook of all caps" 😂

Enjoy! https://medium.com/the-technical-archaeologist/hello-world-on-z-os-a0ef31c1e87f

@nicealias@mastodon.london My kids are definitely lucky to live in a place where there's so much to do! Every weekend I check out the local museums where we have memberships, and the local parks, to see what adventure to go on with them. I didn't have this growing up, the closest major city was 2 hours away and my parents didn't have a lot of money. We got very creative with our woodland adventures. It was a healthy childhood, but simple.

We never had a voice activated "home assistant" so I realize I'm late to the party here, but it's eerie how naturally my kids just talk to computers (and TVs, watches...) with their voice all the time, and simply expect it to work.

@mekki@mas.to @patrizia@hachyderm.io I hate to be vague in a license file, so I need to come up with something 🤔 Everything in this repository is CC-BY, except the keys, they're... whatever they are 😅

@patrizia@hachyderm.io Thanks for chiming in! Yeah, I guess the big question is whether GPG public keys are public domain, or something else...?

I'm working with some folks on licensing for a repository that contains:

- Documentation (written by the team, but meant to be shared)

- GPG public keys (which are also replicated on plenty of public key servers around the internet)

I'm thinking the docs should be CC-BY, but that doesn't really make sense for the public keys.

Any advice here?

(I don't really want to get into the weeds as to why they're putting public keys in a git repository)

Our 7 year old wasn't convinced about video games in the 80s.

"There was a whole MOVIE about the launch of Super Mario Brothers 3!"

Wasn't there? Or was that a fever dream? 😅

Yes. The Wizard (1989).

Watched the trailer to see if they wanted to watch it and wow. So 80s. And I decided not to let them watch the movie where an "emotionally withdrawn but gifted at playing video games"* boy and his brother run away for a video game competition.

* We didn't have autism in the 80s 🫠

Went to the Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland with the boys to check out their Artemis II splashdown activities and see the final hour of descent on the big screen with a bunch of fellow space fans.

And no joke, the laptop running the projection ran out of battery 30 seconds before splashdown 😱

Still fun though, we watched replays when we got home.

On April 7th, 1964 the IBM System/360 was released, the grandfather of all our modern IBM Z systems 🤩

This year I observed this by reading a case study from CACM on IBM’s system/360-370 architecture from 1987 digging in retrospectively to why the platform was still so successful 23 years later, the ACM grants free access to the article here, and it's a lovely read: https://cacm.acm.org/research/case-study-ibms-system-360-370-architecture/

We're now 62 years out, and so many points are still salient in the modern era of these systems

There's a stomach bug making its way through our house. I was sick on Monday evening, and then we were up last night at 2:30AM cleaning up a kiddo and his bed 🤮

It's no fun, but it's been a pretty mild one so far, and I'm grateful for that. And that it waited until we were home and done with flights.

I cleaned out my sister's storage unit over the summer and now need to get it to her in the deep woods of Alberta, Canada (no household delivery, she had to go "into town" to get packages and mail from a PO Box).

It's about 20 boxes of misc stuff 📦📦📦

How?

I've done a lot of searching online and scouring reddit threads, but maybe I've missed something.

I'm worried we'll just have to eat the cost of shipping each box at $100+ each as she can afford it over the next couple of years.

Have mixed feelings about paying to have the door switch fixed on our fancy 9 year old, built-in microwave that came with our townhouse.

Economically, replacement may have been the better move.

But this way I didn't have to deal with extraction, disposal, and remounting of a new one, and it's not another otherwise perfectly working device dumped in a landfill.

RE: @popey@mastodon.social

I recently worked with @popey@mastodon.social to get him set up on the IBM LinuxONE OSS Community Cloud, and I was delighted to hear about his experience in the latest episode of Linux Matters! 🐧

Have an open source project you'd like to build for s390x on? Apply here! https://community.ibm.com/zsystems/form/l1cc-oss-vm-request/

(and thanks to @brubarwal@mastodon.sdf.org for mentioning in the Philly Linux channel that this was out) #mainframe

With the upcoming @xubuntu@floss.social 26.04 release the distribution reaches 20 years as an official flavor in the #Ubuntu community 🥳

To celebrate, we're doing TWO wallpaper contests, the deadline of which was just extended until March 22nd.

Read about them and submit here: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/xubuntu-26-04-community-wallpaper-contest/77213

Bonus: @geekygirldawn@hachyderm.io designed some coins for us, so we now have these sparkly coins for the winners, along with the #Xubuntu stickers! 🪙🪙🪙

@jeffmcneill@hachyderm.io @xubuntu@floss.social Not really! Canonical would probably have numbers from the central repositories and we could ask for those, but they're mirrored all over the world by dozens of individual organizations and we don't have any insight into those.
