I have been thinking recently about how language is a high entropy latent space and what it means.

Latent spaces are sort of magic: they don't just reduce the dimensionality of a higher dimensional space, they also constrain it such that arbitrary movement in the latent space maps to some *meaningful* position in the higher dimensional space. Think about how almost any textual prompt you give to an image generator results in a picture with recognisable shape and form, yet the vast majority of the possible images are basically just random noise.

I really think that crates.io needs a way for crate authors to independently publish advisories without having to go through advisory DB: it's a bottleneck. I can understand that that bottleneck helps to dissuade overzealous publishing of advisories for trivial matters, but I don't think that's an acceptable reason to not have a maintainer-driven system too.

@spacebuffer Yeah, I did not expect this to work at all. I would have been satisfied if it was just tied to a null user or something and the issues became append-only. But it does work, and it's so wonderful. The PR migration is really clever too. Obviously the user that opened the PR doesn't have an account yet so it looks like the source branch gets attached to the target repository, but is hidden and isolated somehow (unless you explicitly click through to it), which is pretty much the best solution I can realistically imagine.

I am seriously impressed by #Forgejo's (the software powering #Codeberg and other GitHub alternatives) migration tool.

Git history, issues, PRs, wiki data; all migrated perfectly from GitHub.

You can link your GitHub account afterwards, and all migrated things move over to your user - so you can edit things like comments you originally wrote on GitHub. It's like the migration never happened.

It even migrates tiny details like comment reactions.

And because the account linking is lazy, users that haven't yet joined Codeberg aren't losing out: the moment they join and connect their account, they suddenly own everything they did on the old repository.

This is wizard shit. I'm a bit blown away at how flawless and easy the process was.

@kornel@mastodon.social Code is not the artifact and has never been the artifact though: the real artifact is the specification the code implements and the practices and rituals that allow it to be comprehended by human beings. Sometimes that specification exists in a form that can be written down, and sometimes it's an informal set of ideas in somebody's head, but the code is functionally impossible to integrate into wider systems without it. LLMs might remove the need for boilerplate - code that is superfluous with respect to the specification - but that's probably all they'll do.

Turned up, car was there (owner was on holiday). Found it was an automatic. The exit was a 40 metres one-way on to a busy dual carriageway. @cstross@wandering.shop During a recent conversation I was quite surprised to find how many people in the group considered cruise control and automated distance-keeping to be essential aspects of driving. Not necessarily a bad or a good thing, just... deeply alien to me. I've always driven manual cars where the torque applied by the engine directly correlates with how far you're holding the accelerator down, and nothing more. I can't help but feel that some have a completely different driving experience.

Maybe there's a model for prosecuting these people and companies to be found in the modern climate legal movement?
