The local #MeshCore has been invaded by bigots, bible quoting bots on public channels, and unwelcome internet bridges to far off places that are just clogging up our airwaves. It’s so annoying, and while I can block the worst of them in my app, they’re still making it harder to get messages out for everyone. Very much hope future repeater releases have ways to deal with bad actors.

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange I will say the server page doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence for me — it appears to be run by someone who’s relatively new to masto (“ask the community for help”), and “be kind” means “don’t upload a lot of stuff to my server”, not “be nice to one another”. It looks higher risk to me to flame out due to disagreement, burnout, or IT issues. It could be great, but my inclination would be to direct new burners to mastodon.social, a regional server, infosec/hachyderm if they’re techie, or social.coop for more cooperative and small. The original tribe.net had a lot of cool vibes tho. The US bellydance community was super strong there.

OK, this is pretty cool! Probably about 4-5 hours of recipe work today, and I have:

My home recipes (76 of them) in #Obsidian, written in #cookLang format and the community plugin
A script that generates a PDF cookbook of them
My old #LinuxMint thinkpad with a cookCLI local server
This means anyone on my wifi can browse machinename.local:9080 and use the recipes (https://cooklang.org/cli/commands/server/)
It's really easy to browse and search to find, say, all recipes that use chicken -- see pics below

I used Gemini to OCR ~65 handwritten recipes from ~30 years ago (with weird food and water smudges all over them!) and then convert them into the initial cooklang format. There was some cleanup afterwards (and some editing/standardization I still want to do).

I'm really, really chuffed with the result. Also, owning all your own stuff in markdown is cool, and I'm bemused all these years after I wrote a tech writer portfolio in LaTex, I'm still using tools with it.

I pondered installing KOReader on the paperwhite since it's at least a touch device, but last I tried that, KOReader didn't seem to organize books the way Calibre does. It wouldn't easily show me a list of all my books on the main screen. After realizing that (and how poorly it worked on the non-touchscreen kindle I was using), I gave up. But maybe it's worth playing with now.

I've now jailbroken a Kindle paperwhite successfully. Only took me an hour so I could get my own screensaver on it. 🙃

Sadly, my favorite kindle 4's screen was damaged in a recent trip and my old paperwhite's screen has a small crack on it as well. And I was exhausted and not looking carefully when I tried to rebuy a kindle 4 with buttons on ebay and instead got a first gen kindle touch. 🤦‍♀️

Fortunately, kindles are only $20-40 on ebay. Unfortunately, I don't really need FOUR of them, right now, even jailbroken? And the mussed screens really bother me. I keep forgetting and trying to unsmudge them.

Pondering whether I should set one out in the little library as its own lending object. Or wondering if the local phone place would repair a screen for less than $30. Probably not?

It's a random thing, but I'm feeling really happy about having my small business give an annual donation to a couple of open source projects it depends on.

Huge shout out and thanks to all these for being so useful and solid that I *can* depend on them:

- OBS Studio (@OBSProject@mastodon.social), used basically daily to get local videos of sessions for supervision and study

- LibreOffice (@libreoffice@fosstodon.org), used weekly or a few times a month

- Linux Mint (@linuxmint@mastodon.social) which is my backup machine's OS, someday to become my main one, hopefully.
