look there's a billion other reasons why people are against AI and all but fundamentally the core of my person reason is that I've already spent 30 years learning how to teach computers how to do exactly what I tell them to, so I am exceptionally disinterested in having them do things less accurately by talking to them in a sloppier language

RE: https://mastodon.social/@fesshole/116957223807180545 NeXTSTEP included a Webster Dictionary app as a standard utility. If a user had a picture of themselves tied to their login account, the app would display it in the definition of “gullible.” As in, “you’re so gullible, if you look up the word it’s got your picture next to it.”

Pre internet I once drove half an hour home to get a dictionary to prove to my work colleague that the word gullible was in the dictionary. I was literally 2 mins away, on the way back, when it dawned on me.

@mattblaze@federate.social I’ve got the first Ultra as well and was a little annoyed it won’t get the next updates. But the software updates on the watch has never been as big a deal for me as the hardware updates. I’ll just stick with this until the battery doesn’t make it through the day, or a compelling new hardware feature comes out. My daughter’s Series 3 finally died - the screen literally popped off because of a swollen battery. I think we got that used / refurb in 2019, so 7+ years isn’t unheard of.

@paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange @cR0w@infosec.exchange One of my favorite sed stories was when I got called in at 2 am because our mail spool had filled up. Someone had mailed a large attachment (at the time, this probably meant a couple meg) to an organization-wide distro and now we had 500+ copies of it filling up the my building’s mailserver. About 20 min into it, I got a call from the contract PM, checking in on folks working the problem at all our customer’s locations. Most were slowly…well, I don’t know what they were doing. Clearly they were taking the long way. I told him I had a short script (hell, might’ve been one line) and was excising the attachment from everyone’s spool files. He got nervous and suggested maybe I should take a more cautious approach. Then I told him it was mostly done and all looked good. I think he was a bit surprised. :)

All the while scientists warn of deep disruptions to ecosystems, possibly harming the sleep of millions of people, and as astronomers warn it will make the universe even less visible. They say it's to feed solar farms, for disaster relief. Other uses? Agri giants beaming sunlight to crops, construction giants to their build sites, concert spectacles, super rich playing god at weddings. https://ca.pcmag.com/news/16760/fcc-approves-reflect-orbitals-giant-mirror-satellite-that-astronomers-hate

My suggestion: present the con’s year number in a numeric base equal to the number. So Con # 2 would be: 10 (base 2). Event #3 would be 10 (base 3). And so on. (I told you it was kinda stupid…)

I had an interview last Thursday. Haven't heard anything since (not that I really expected to, but, you know, it'd be nice, and aren't all job-seekers this anxious?)

I sent a note to the interviewer, thanking him for his time (totally lost track of it over a very busy weekend), and within 15 minutes, got an email to schedule the next step.

Coincidence? Probably. But that doesn't make me less happy to have reached back anyway -- this process sucks on both sides of the table. If there's anything I can do to make it easier for them, I'm happy to do it as a human, but also because it may help me.

Now I just gotta prepare for a "live analysis/logic session." Let the anxiety (re)commence!

@angusm@mastodon.social But let’s remember that the palantiri were not themselves evil. They were created by the elves, perhaps even Fëanor himself, as a way to communicate over large distances. Over time, most of them were lost, until all that remained were two controlled by evil demigods, and a third used by a human who thought he could hold his own against the other two. It’s not an analogy for evil. It’s an analogy for social media turning evil in the presence of dominating evil will, alongside a failure of federation. (Though really, it was used by the company to say they’re basically a panopticon, which clearly signalled evil intent. But I kinda like the failed social media analogy. :) )

@Dio9sys@haunted.computer but doesn’t stacking lasagna just make a new, taller lasagna?

@Dio9sys@haunted.computer You have lasagna. Someone gives you more lasagna. You put second lasagna on top of first lasagna. How many lasagna?

@iagox86 @cR0w I used to love writing short blog posts for my company. Nothing earth shattering, but just interesting enough that it kept our name circulating and maybe, just maybe, helped out a few people interested in the same problems. Then we got bought, and the blog was all shaped by marketing from then on. (same at the company after, as great as it was in other ways). Community engagement became just plain engagement. Find me another small company of nerds who just want to help out others, and share bits of what they've learned for the community, and I'll be happy.

@dschaub@mstdn.social The "Mac neo" would basically be a Mini, but in an Apple TV form factor? I wonder if they could even get it to the ATV 3 size. That had room for power, Ethernet, HDMI, and 1 USB, so it's not unreasonable... Ship it with velcro strips so you can just stick it to the back of any 3rd party monitor.

@rmogull@defcon.social Our kids have all earned Eagle and aged out (though two remain semi-active in OA and Venturing while in college). Right now I’m just trying to focus on making a difference for those around me. Also, it’s hard to know for certain what’s really happening, when the press focuses (and extrapolates, it seems) every announcement from the pentagon. While Scouting America slowly dribbles out vague details. Hoping a lot of what we’ve inferred today is mitigated as the bluster subsides.
