A large part of this is driven by the fact that tech corporations don't actually want to deliver a tool for you to use, they want to build a storefront on your desk. There's a basic disconnect between what users want and what vendors want.
(Yes, yes, Linux, I know. But many users value the seeming convenience and simplicity of corporate products over the flexibility/control of open-source & the corporations use that as a Trojan horse to erect a shopping mall in everyone’s house).
