@KimPerales@toad.social The US will not run out of oil or gasoline. The US is a net exporter of oil. Companies are emptying their tanks to get a great price outside the US, but they are still pumping sufficient fuel. It will be the same price (less taxes) as other countries pay, though, and that’s going to be a challenge. If Trump really wanted to bring costs down, he only has to ban or limit exports.

Interesting how the average gas price in Canada dropped by 10¢/L on April 20th, relative to the US average price, but has been creeping steadily upwards since then. #CanPoli #CdnPoli

@johnefrancis Good point. Trudeau’s TMX opened up in May 2024. It ramped up to 85% capacity over the course of a year. Who is our biggest non-US customer? It is now the United Kingdom, who has stepped up as a very important customer for Canadian products. Huge thanks goes out to the UK for helping us get through these trying times. I'll grab some imported cheddar cheese the next time I'm at the store. @FluentInFinance It’s 4.9%/ year, which is still a lot. Inflation is compounded, ie, f = r²⁵, not r x 25. So to calculate the average rate, you need to calculate r = ²⁵√ f.

This is pretty much as I expected. The existing Liberal caucus members were elected under certain expectations and I can't imagine they would put up with Carney accepting people not conforming to those same expectations. Note that there were likely already LPC MPs whose *personal* beliefs were against abortion, but accepted that those beliefs were personal only, not to be enforced by government. #CanPoli #CdnPoli

Apple's HomeKit, because I hate big lights (and I cannot lie) and so I have several small lights that all need to be turned off or on and I can have a single switch that does this.

@cmconseils@mastodon.social Curmudgeon, here. I'd rather not incentivize longer commutes and higher greenhouse gas emissions. I think there needs to be a compromise. Businesses like to congregate, but that puts nearby housing in high demand. Remote work is the obvious solution, but there are downsides to that, too.

Plastic bags look like jellyfish and straws are probably just accidental meals along with kelp and sea grass. They also break down into micro particles quickly. And the bags and straws are most likely to blow out of open garbage cans into streams and down to the ocean, if not just outright discarded there.

@hyc What happens is one side of a fibre is +ve, while the other side is -ve. This is part of the plastic as it is extruded. So the net charge is zero and there is no leakage. You don't actually notice a charge at our scale, but to a micro particle it is very apparent since the fibres are huge in comparison. Regardless, it doesn't really matter which side the particle is near. Like an uncharged wall holding onto a rubbed balloon, it will still attach.

How do N95 masks catch particles that are smaller than the holes?

1. Particles are sticky because of static forces
2. Large particles go straight until they hit a mask layer
Tiny particles get knocked around by molecules until they hit a fibre
3. Fibres are given an electric charge so that they attract all particles (the mid-sized particles carrying the SAR2 virus need this)
