I get the data from NSIDC's API which has a minimum 2 day smoothing window (I've tried to get 1 day or removed that parameter and it fails - I don't have access to the docs sadly)

August 13 last year had plenty of 2m thick sea ice North of Greenland and Canada which is almost completely lacking this year.
