People need to stop viewing Linus as some kind of figurehead for the Linux desktop / free software. Not because of his recent statements in particular, he's entitled to his own opinions, but because he generally just has never represented the values or mindset everyone seems to think he has. He oversees an important technical component of the desktop stack, but that component is used in so many other places as well, and he probably couldn't care less about the success of Linux on personal devices in particular. He's never coming to save any of you from the technological apocalypse or whatever. #Linux #FOSS

If it looked like the first picture, its window decorations obviously wouldn't match the many GNOME apps I run on my system. But there's no law of the universe stating that it has to. We *can* just let go of the constructed idea that window controls in particular have to match across every single app while nothing else does.

People are saying that free software would be more popular if it had more UI designers involved. But there *are* lots of people trying to work on design in FOSS. They are just often really unappreciated here, because the audience that benefits from their work doesn't exist in our shared spaces. These people are out in the real world and have never heard of an "issue tracker" or "RFC" before.

We need a name for the phenomenon where a technically inclined vocal minority tries to push a general-audience piece of software in a more and more technical direction, not realizing that it would come at the expense of practically everyone else. #freesoftware

In a way I'm one of those developers. I was drawn to GNOME ecosystem when I saw how much effort was invested into renewing and modernizing the stack around the turn of the decade, with flatpak, GTK4, libadwaita, the HIG, etc. I definitely wasn't the only one who jumped on the GNOME train back then, because it seems like the effort that has been invested into the platform is really paying off now with all these cool apps appearing.

This might just be my subjective experience, but it feels like GNOME app ecosystem is entering a new stage where the current modern tooling has been available for long enough, and a sufficient enough third-party developer culture has been established, that we are getting a wave of bigger and more ambitious apps than before. As if the developers who published their first small libadwaita indie apps 3-4 years ago are now using that experience to build and support a new, more advanced class of projects. #GNOME

Just handed off my coordinator role for the Norwegian GNOME translation team. During my time as a coordinator, the Norwegian translations have undergone a significant overhaul in the core apps, and a lot of Circle apps have also been translated into Norwegian for the first time.

I'm proud of that, and plan to continue contributing translations now and then, while Kjartan, who has coordinated the Norwegian translation team for the majority of its lifetime, takes on the role as a coordinator again.

- "Newcomer of the Year" in the education category in 2024
- "Biggest Growth" and "Most Improved" in the education category in 2025

To be honest this feels like I've missed out on my own Oscar's ceremony.

@vtrlx@mastodon.social Thanks, I think this is the final piece of missing info I needed. Until very recently, GTK would handle compose sequences and dead keys internally if necessary. But since 4.19.2, it expects the compositor to handle this instead (i.e. you need to have ibus installed). @vtrlx@mastodon.social Thanks for the info! The second reporter uses NixOS with hyprland (🫣), so I think the problem is related to a system/runtime component rather than a specific distribution. But if it's reproducible across Debian systems it should be easier to pinpoint

Have any of you experienced issues with typing accents in your #GNOME apps recently? Some people are having issues with #Keypunch and numerous other apps using the GNOME 49/50 runtimes, but I can't pinpoint the exact reason.

So, to summarize: Life happens, and I'll have some long chunks of both uptime and downtime during the next 2+ years. I'll try to plan around this so it has the least amount of negative effects possible, and after matriculation in 2028 I hope to be back here more "permanently".

Timeline going forward: August - most of my current occupations will be gone and I'll have more time to invest into GNOME and my personal projects again April 2027 - Mandatory conscript service in the Royal Norwegian Air Force (I was drafted). I'll likely vanish almost completely from the web in this period. April 2028 - end of conscription August 2028 - Starting my 5-year integrated masters degree in electronics systems design at NTNU (hopefully)

Tiny life update for those interested: I'm currently in the final semester of videregående skole (the Norwegian equivalent of high school), which is taking up most of my time at the moment. Combine this with a metric ton of other real-life commitments, and there's not much time left for personal projects.

In my opinion, this is the most relevant paragraph right now: "People who complain about 'politics' in FOSS projects are obviously not complaining about politics in the general, this we have already established. Neither are they complaining about having norms. What they have a problem with are specific politics and specific norms."
