I miss simple mechanics with hidden depth. I miss short but highly replayable adventures. I miss controls that wouldn't strain my thumbs. I miss games with ridiculous amounts of missions and extra content. I miss tight gameplay loops serving short sessions.

Just cooked with charcoal for the first time. Did not go great! Notes for the next attempt:

- Use more charcoal
- Use a lot more fluid (they are not exaggerating when they say to soak the briquettes)
- If you're looking, you ain't cooking!

Went to a retro game store today and immediately and *wow* game prices are ridiculously high. $50 for Metroid II or Dragon Warrior Monsters is absolutely balkworthy. I could buy TV dock to play ROMs on the TV for that money.

I'll probably do so sooner than later, but to summarize the many reasons to prefer proportional over monospace for code: I believe monospace is a distraction. FWIW, when I use Parchment (for most of my programming and all of my writing), I use the system default sans-serif font. That is how I expect most users to use it as well.

@tris@chaos.social I don't know if the two apps are too comparable; Other than the surface level of being plain text editors, both apps have very different goals. G•T•E is concerned with compatibility and fitting in with how users would expect a text editor to lay out text, whereas Parchment is utterly unconcerned because my goal was primarily to enable too plain text editing using proportional type. The consequences of that difference are significant.

Parchment is "maximally minimalist" in scope; It contains only the features it needs and nothing more. Despite this relatively small size, Parchment has been over two years in the making. This is in part because I wanted to release a complete, finished app but also because I believed it was important to get it right. Other projects I've started and completed in that time served as exercises in determining what Parchment needed, and what it didn't. The result is what you see today.

@bragefuglseth@sunny.garden I think it's possible that I accidentally purged it in my post-installation-debloating spree after installing Trixie, because Debian insists on including some weird stuff. What remains odd is that this *only* affected GNOME 49/50 Flatpaks. Distro packages never broke.

@bragefuglseth@sunny.garden I believe it's a Debian 13 problem specifically with the compose key. The compose key works fine in apps using these runtimes when running on OSes using newer GNOME versions. Why this happens, I have no idea. Very annoying because over the past 6 months my compose key has gradually become more and more useless.

Duplicating tabs is, as far as I know, something that is not possible to do in any existing command-line shell/terminal setup. Telepipe's unique approach allowed this feature to be implemented basically for free. Like everything else that differentiates from the terminal, tab duplication is the kind of thing that definitely requires rethinking one's approach to working in the command-line, but it should be very beneficial.

Version 1.2 of Telepipe has been released.

Tabs can now be duplicated. Duplicated tabs inherit the working directory, prefix, command output, and command history from their original tab.

New tabs are now always opened in the home directory with no prefix.

The tab overview now shows active prefixes (if any) and numbers each tab, to make it easier to differentiate similar tabs.

It's the mark of someone so cowardly that they cannot imagine themselves doing anything but make the world worse AND YET is also such a happy participant in what they know to be terrible that they have no problem actively accelerating it. "The world's polluted" is not an argument for polluting more. It should be a call to action, but the existing software development culture had already rotted by the time vibecoding came along.

Many—not all, but many—of the people seemingly angry over this change simply hold grudges over perceived slights which were made over a decade ago, such as the removal of the system tray. The rant is relevant because the grudges are a big driver of the controversy. The article closes with remarks about middle-click paste precisely as a way to end with a shutdown of the remarks made by concern trolls.

Missing from this post is a suggestion that users compare the speed of their work using middle-click paste with the speed of their work without, but I didn't want to be negative toward the feature because that's not what this is about. The important thing to understand is that nobody's taking the feature away from anyone. If you actually read what GNOME contributors have to say about the feature, you'll find a LOT of nuance. The same can't be said of the haters.

@maaretp I think this post might single-handedly remove the term "self-taught" from my vocabulary. I have a longstanding habit of writing detailed developer documentation and tutorials for my projects (both professional and personal) in large part because I am a community taught programmer who continues to rely primarily on written documentation to learn.
