@mathew @betabug @jonny @david_chisnall @chris_evelyn I concur with your suggestions and they arguably reflect "current best practice". age is a little tricker to integrate into many people's workflows. Some have suggested Cryptomator but I haven't evaluated it yet.

@betabug @mathew @jonny @david_chisnall @chris_evelyn When I returned from my 7+ year sabbatical from tech, I posted the issue that I had run into with the Microsoft port of OpenSSH to LinkedIn and it experienced a minor "slashdotting" effect. It turned out Vixie had already been there and castigated them for their old "Embrace-Extend-Extinguish" tricks. Finding out gpg-agent was doing the same took a little more research and searching, but not much.

@betabug @mathew @jonny @david_chisnall @chris_evelyn The workaround is to use ed25519-sk backed by a Yubikey or similar FIDO2/U2F device, or KeePassXC dynamically loading and removing static SSH keys for you as its .kdbx password database is locked and unlocked over the course of your session.

@betabug @mathew @jonny @david_chisnall @chris_evelyn I think I'd let what Paul Vixie said speak for itself, but... gpg-agent exposes unprotected filesystem endpoints on Windows, will not let you remove loaded keys, nor does it support any of the other official OpenSSH options. It also caches keys on disk. Microsoft's ssh-agent port is slightly less bad but still pretty bad; it caches them in the per-user Registry. https://github.com/PowerShell/Win32-OpenSSH/issues/1487#issuecomment-2894953357 I was hoping this was more common knowledge by now...

@jonny @catch56 @david_chisnall @chris_evelyn I continued: It was explicitly prompted to produce this output. It cannot replace a human software engineer for this reason, and the output can be endlessly edited by a human in the loop to claim full copyright and authorship. It's Clippy. The same goes for the "reasoning" it emits about the output it generated. That is why we call it "Generative AI". It is not intelligent so "AI" itself is a misnomer.

@jonny @catch56 @david_chisnall @chris_evelyn I just generated example code using Claude Haiku for an RPC framework in C++. Note to self: Do not be deceived by the LLM's capabilities. It has clearly written based on what it was trained on. If the comments are misleading, the output is likely to be bunk. The LLM did not "reason" its way to these conclusions, and it is equally possible to poison the LLM when training, even without prompt injection; one may merely outright lie or obfuscate.

@mathew @jonny @david_chisnall @chris_evelyn I still thought being able to run #PGP on an #Amiga was cool at the time, though, and Phil #Zimmerman smugging the source code through customs as #OCR -able books was pretty neat too. #EFF did the same thing for #Cracking #DES later in the 90s with help from John Gilmore, #FPGA boards stacked up on a #Sun #VME chassis.

@pluralistic It's the threat to cognition itself which is an issue. Learning is every human being's birthright. It isn't as simple as the Butlerian Jihad in Frank Herbert's novels, because these are distinctly unthinking machines. What Chomsky said about LLMs needs to be tattooed on various people's heads: "Their basic design prevents them from reaching the minimal condition of adequacy for a theory of human language: distinguishing possible from impossible languages."

@pluralistic This is in keeping with the principle of TANSTAAFL: There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch, and I'm writing as someone who has Apple, Inc. as a free rider: every time someone turns an iPhone on, my code runs, and I don't get a royalty. Also, Robert Anton Wilson reminding us "Reality is what you can get away with" and "Reality is constantly being warred over by opposing teams of magicians".

@jonny @catch56 @david_chisnall @chris_evelyn Again, this is starting to demolish what I had been keeping an open mind about as a worthwhile use case for LLMs: security auditing. If the inference costs are so high already, and the economics are known to be infeasible/massive unrealistic as Ed Zitron keeps reminding us, isn't this just all about a compute arms race with no real benefit beyond that, due to the constant hallucination, mean reversion, prompt engineering, risk/wealth transfer?

@david_chisnall @catch56 @jonny @chris_evelyn This accords with my reasoned-out opinion on Generative AI so far: most of the apparent economic benefits really are just forms of risk transfer, and actual grown-up insurance underwriters and risk control professionals are hip to this, in addition to the counterparty-induced intellectual property infringement risk which GitHub Copilot is just trying to push onto its users. I was willing to keep an open mind about Anthropic, but they are disingenous.

@david_chisnall @jonny @chris_evelyn For this very reason, I have a Noam Chomsky quote at the top of one of my many continuous working notes files to remind me: "Their basic design prevents them from reaching the minimal condition of adequacy for a theory of human language: distinguishing possible from impossible languages." It should be tattoed on certain people's foreheads. Also it's worth keeping tabs on who knows what for the inevitable "citation needed": https://buildcognitiveresonance.substack.com/p/who-and-what-comprises-ai-skepticism

LinkedIn is a screaming doomscroll of business idiot marketing drivel for the most part. I do get the occasional bit of clue there, but I try to modulate what I "give back" carefully because of the signal-noise ratio being so badly skewed.

@david_chisnall @jonny @chris_evelyn I intend to exhaust "conventional weapons" of clang-tidy, cppcheck, plain old regexp and others, before resorting to the likes of what I'm now retargeting as pi-dev (shittycodingagent.ai, a sub-agent for OpenClaw without a PLAN.md). Even Opencode.ai may be a bridge too far and it has an outstanding provider trust related execution vulnerability right at this minute, despite perhaps being the most cost effective agentic coding tool at the moment

@jonny @david_chisnall @chris_evelyn I wouldn't claim to be a security guru of any kind. I just know enough crypto APIs to get by, my doing TCP-MD5 in FreeBSD back in 2004 was largely a historical accident, and putting libsodium into that other code base I hack on turned out to be a bit of a "dogshit refactoring". I did work onsite at JPMorgan Chase in 2001 as 3rd line security support, but didn't get the fat paycheque as I was not a JPM employee, just working for who they outsourced to.

@jonny @david_chisnall @chris_evelyn I have the late Ross Anderson's "Security Engineering, Third Edition" open in my SumatraPDF session right this minute because I need to get up to speed with implementing capability-based security across said code base, fast. They tried to use ACLs in the past and it was just bloated. Also, I've taken to referring to Mythos as Metasploit '26. Capabilities for RPC plus SBOM may be the kryptonite for agentic attack vectors...

@jonny @peter_sc Of course, the open bits are things the "clankers" will have the opportunity to train on, but the whole barrage of defensive technology is available, starting with go-away and encrypted PDFs.

@jonny @peter_sc This seems like a neat trick. If I release what I wind up creating, it's going to have to be under MPL-2.0 for the open bits. I do have potential juicy proprietary bits, but "free the future", not looking to be an extractive monopolist because the things I really want out of life are not about money, other than supporting myself and my activities. That said, I have a physical aversion to making the rich richer.

@jonny @chris_evelyn In my case the efficiency argument is tilted somewhat here, because there were significant sunk costs in the original code base. The original sponsors were AT&T, Intel, NSF, Microsoft, Vyatta and a defence contractor called CenGen. The whole thing had significant tech debt anyway, but when it got spun out from ICSI and took VC money, it itself got shitcanned just after the sub-prime mortgage crisis by the very same VCs.

@jonny @chris_evelyn Again, in a similar boat with an old mate. He tried to vibe-code a FreeBSD network test tool for the SCTP protocol with Codex and it hallucinated a sysctl and an inpcb member. Then, he tried to read Nik Suresh's "I Will Fucking Piledrive You If You Mention AI Again" with an LLM summary, which completely misses the whole point of the article, in addition to kind of proving its central thesis. I don't have anything against LLMs, maybe pi-dev alone is the right approach now

@jonny @chris_evelyn Wht you just said is exactly the boat I am in right now, with taking a C++03 code base to C++26. Not for radio. I actually use the terminology of "shitcanning" technical debt and deferring what are "dogshit refactorings" in my own notes. I get to see where they really were just kicking the can ever further down the line! The sad part is I was "Just following orders" at the time.

@davidsonsr @jawarajabbi @pluralistic The pressure is upon me, choosing self employment after 7 year sabbatical, to adopt GenAI in some form or other. Most of the architectural work I am doing could not be directly assisted by GenAI, and "vibe coding" just does not enter into it. Limited LLM use for new code using specific models. Perhaps LLM assisted code security audit. But outsourcing it all to Claude Code? That is really stupid; my strategy is common with other "chess players". Be a centaur!

@davidsonsr @jawarajabbi @pluralistic The problem is similar to that of the 00s or the 10s: slapping cloud tags on a proposition to attract investment, followed by slapping blockchain on everything, and now it's GenAI instead. The investors involved cannot be relied upon to take a sufficiently well-researched and scientific approach. They rely on mediated experience to reach judgements as we all do. But it is musical chairs now, given the level of mistruth and misrepresentation now happening.

@pluralistic@mamot.fr PSA: #Brave has started indexing and presenting results from #grokipedia , a known #disinformation source which uses #LLMs unethically. I am very disappointed by this development; #Grok pollutes public discourse in a very #toxic way, similar to #Meta 's use of LLMs, for example. There is a way to filter these out: use the #NoGrok extension. https://github.com/403-html/NoGrok #grandtheftautocomplete #enshittification

@alienghic @ohir @Andres4NY @KathyReid Multicast routing is complicated even just for a small ISP or carrier network topology. I have the luck of having to refactor a C++ implementation written by one of the original instigators of the first PIM-SM at USC in the USA. I was in fact reading what development documentation he'd managed to write for it this very evening. He now works for Google so he's probably not able to assist freely. We worked on the same team in the 00s and I have not seen him

@ohir @alienghic @Andres4NY @KathyReid Pragmatic General Multicast is a special case; it streams, yet if implemented fully, it has provisions for some store-and-forward for error recovery by downstream leaf nodes/hosts. The financial traders sometimes employ a flavour of it; what was formely called 29West Latency Buster Messaging (LBM) was basically just PGM with knobs on. Older Cisco IOS releases implemented PGM, there is open source floating around out there, probably ZeroMQ best source now.

@alienghic @ohir @Andres4NY @KathyReid I can probably claim to know a bit about multicast as I wrote the host-side portion of the control protocols MLD/IGMP. BSD license Corporate Free rider effect: every time someone connects with an iPhone, my code runs. Apple integrated the code, I don't get a royalty, and any attempts by them to recruit me over the years have been... somewhat cack handed to say the least, plus they dicked over a now deceased close friend on some GPU driver code in the 00s.

@alienghic @ohir @Andres4NY @KathyReid Inter-domain multicast. Here be dragons. Hardly any ISP does it properly. The only people who do do it properly are high frequency financial traders and investment banks, or very dedicated academic and community networks. You can pretty much forget about it working properly over ad-hoc nets; that is a very specialist topic. I wrote an OLSR process for mobile/wireless use that CRC Canada took an interest in and left the design open for that, but very 2FC!

@Andres4NY @KathyReid This is why Ph.D is sometimes jokingly referred to as "the too-far-thing-taking". Yeah, I used to knock up tunnels to AWS over IPSEC with pfSense for a rather annoying fintech client. They ended up in Duo Security's old serviced office space (with a smelly, busy toilet) after Duo found somewhere proper in London E1. But overlays are overlays, and you always pay a tax. Part of the motivation behind segment routing is to get rid of that tax for much cruft. George Varghese FTW

@Andres4NY @KathyReid Tor isn't ideal for a lot of reasons, but it's probably the best we have in comparison to e.g. I2P or Freenet which are closer to the NDN philosophy. Tor could benefit from incremental refinements like perhaps using QUIC, but QUIC's kryptonite is suboptimal server-side dataplane (it is hard to accelerate unless you go to eBPF/XDP unlike Tor which uses TLS over TCP still)

@Andres4NY @KathyReid Incremental cellular deployment of something else is fine and is/has arguably already happened with stuff like WireGuard based VPN providers being popular. But they all depend on overlays. You still need to have a substrate to build on, even if you layer decentralized addressing/routing mechanisms on top.

@Andres4NY @KathyReid Michael Padlipsky's book "The elements of networking style", from his time co-designing the forerunner of the original Internet, the ARPANET, is very illuminating here. It's at the Internet Archive, and the clankers (GenAI, LLMs) haven't trained on it because of the protective LCP PDF DRM. https://archive.org/details/elementsofnetwor00padl
