Vital work by law enforcement in Monterey County includes the work outlined in story by John C. It served as sandbox frame for our daughter. On day of this photo, we were rolling it to a neighbor’s for reuse in same manner. Ebikes are "becoming one of the biggest public safety challenges facing our community. Not because e-bikes are inherently dangerous. It’s because too many riders are treating them like toys instead of vehicles. Public safety officials are advising juvenile riders and their parents to get caught up on the rules of the road, and to follow them whether on two wheels or four…. A helpful friendpointed out importance of needing both hands back on handlebars promptly, to better control bike. We do signal initially, of course. Also make extra effort to get attn of drivers while waiting for light to change, which helps! ("Be visible & predictable.”) We don’t worry if anyone thinks our added hand motions (i.e., pointing straight to indicate that will be our direction when light changes) silly or unnecessary— Better to be looked over than overlooked! In our experience, drivers understand&respect (i.e., let us proceed straight thru intersection before they turn, as legally required). We’re also sold on SLOWING hand signal— really gets most drivers to slow incl if passing us.

Short of bikeways with a physical barrier, bike boxes at intersections are some of our favorite infrastructure. We want EVERY appropriate intersection in our county to have them.

Kudos to Canadian bike advocates sharing helpful resources, in particular: Thanks to BC Cycling Coalition and Capital Bike for bike event parking / bike valet templates, etc. Updated links: Toolkit https://www.bcbikevalet.ca/contents / related report https://bccycling.ca/blog/bike-valets-in-bc-show-growing-impact-on-mode-shift-climate-2025-final-report Monterey County is among the many regions that have had bike valet parking https://bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tourists/valet-parking-service-for-cyclists at some events, but not nearly enough. (It isn’t feasible that the most frequent valet provider for many years simply can’t do it all.) We’d love to see more people providing bike valet parking here—and chances are many of you have the same need in your region.
