For those who were watching television in the 70s and 80s, who were not living in the United States at the time, was the broadcast of anamorphic widescreen movies at 4:3 something you remember from the era?
As a recap of the thread thus far, anamorphic widescreen is a method of horizontally compressing images, at time of recording, so to store images on storage media with a 4:3 frame. Playback equipment can then be used to expand the film back to widescreen for projection or playback.
That said, there's nothing to stop one from playing back or broadcasting the 4:3 aspect ratio filmstock as is. Per Andrew on this thread:
"It was cheaper to do that than to properly pan and scan, and didn't require the specialized lens. \ It became the aesthetics of cheap, of trash, of Punk."

That said, one respondent is pontificating that in 45 years of film editing they've never seen this happen anywhere, that pan and scan was the universal standard. That they were employed as a film editor pretty much establishes that their perspective was of someone who did the thing they believe everyone did. (Everyone including those who couldn't be arsed to pay a film editor to do the thing.)
So please do chime in. Did you see movies, watching TV outside of Usia, cheaply broadcast in the 70s and 80s, where all the actors were impossibly skinny, the film having been broadcast at 4:3 without any effort to letterbox, let alone pan and scan?

The switch isn't my interest. The generational imprinting is. Hence the home video angle sounds promising. For instance, have a very distinct recollection of a throwaway gag scene, in latter era nostalgic animated programming, depicting a representation of the live action martial arts broadcasts of the time, with even more exaggerated elongation of bodies on the vertical. This being a semiotic pastiche immediately recognizable to those of a certain generation.
Last century Usenet will be useful to dig into. Though it may be a bit too early for the trends to even have appeared. Folk who grew up watching that stuff had to become established in media industries for the influence to begin manifesting in new media.

OTOH, there are times when degradation is proactive. Back in the 90s, myself was part of a team managing one of the first ecommerce sites, for a major cosmetics and personal care company.
Our client began complaining that the product images on the shopping site looked bad. Whole product lines were sent back to the photographer to be re-shot. We reviewed our entire process for how those photos were produced and added to the catalog database, but couldn't identify the issue.
Eventually, we figured out the problem. Most of the folk who worked for our client were visiting the website from home, via the America Online internet service. AOL was helpfully passing all images through a proxy server that compressed them to provide for speedier downloads.
Our team was able to figure out ways to take the photos such as to ensure they'd survive the compression process without being severely garbled, by essentially taking lower quality photos to begin with, and then having our quality control team test each photo via a computer running AOL in a company hallway, before approving those that survived the proxy for inclusion in the online product catalog.

That said, the idea that degradation is unidirectional can be deceptive. Video essayist Noodle recently discussed how pixel art video games rendered for modern displays actually look worse, because the very ways CRT displays degraded the image were part of how those artists achieved unique effects. Another video essay on the same channel explores the history of green coloring in various releases of The Matrix, which casts into question the very notion that there was ever a non-degraded version of that film.
Transformation is part of how art works.
Relatedly, a reactor myself follow recently commented on how often TV shows in the 90s used shadow, casting actors in partial darkness, to powerful effect, a technique of film lighting that has been largely abandoned in later decades. Their having pointed thus out, am noticing same in other shows from the 90s.
Aesthetics are choices. You, personally, may not like a particular choice, but that doesn't mean another choice would have been better. Only different.

Movies could be produced for various aspect ratios because a theater projection screen could accommodate that variation. Blow up an analog image large enough, and you can get away with a lot.
Broadcasting those films over television was always going to involve compromises. There are still compromises for digital, just of a different sort. There is no ideal mode of visual representation.
My interest is in how those compromises impact the aesthetic sensibilities of folk who would become visual artists in subsequent generation, using different technologies, with different compromises, but nonetheless having their way of seeing and representing images shaped by the jank of televised Saturday afternoon matinees.

Interesting. So based on what am finding, it may not be that TV stations compressed the films in question, so much as they didn't go to the trouble of uncompressing the already squashed 35mm for broadcast.
Still only finding discussion of the technology rather than the impact of those broadcasts on later art, but at least this provides more insight into what may have been happening at the stations.

Am aware of pan and scan (cropping, selectively) and letterboxing. Both of which are addressed in OP.
Pan and scan requires someone make editorial decisions about what is seen through the window and what is cropped out. Letterboxing was often not acceptable to audiences, as you note.
For Saturday afternoon movies, especially on UHF channels, horizontal compression was a way to avoid sacrificing screen real estate without actually doing any editorial work. Another reply to this thread provides the term "anamorphic widescreen".
The question went to the impact, on later art, of folk growing up with such squashing of film for broadcast. Not to alternatives to such squashing, as if the lived experience of seeing such squashed films on television never happened. A non-responsive answer is non-responsive.

Grew up watching impossibly lanky live-action martial artists on screen, and have a sense that this has impacted the aesthetics of media inheriting from that experience of the genre in latter decades.
Yet am only turning up discussions of the much later transition of television production to widescreen formats. My interest is in how those who grew up with already wide-screen film being squeezed to fit then contemporary television screens... have perhaps reflected that technologically-mediated way of seeing in art thereafter.

Really need to stop arguing with folk who believe "late stage" is a thing.
The term "capitalism" first appears in print in 1850 (Blanc). Supposed "late capitalism" was identified by Sombart as starting in 1918.
At this point, supposed capitalism has been "late" for 108 of the 176 years, or three fifths of the time, during which "capitalism" has been a word.
It's easier to imagine a forever late stage of capitalism than to imagine that capitalist society, in the metropole at least, is mostly dead and buried.
For to mourn the demiurge would be to enter into an uncertain territory, of rentier society and whatever might come after, for which canonical 19th-century maps, however indelible, are ill-suited.
So capitalism the revenant, the malevolent Jesus figure that refuses to die, son of the god-idol state, haunts us still, and forever shall haunt those for whom retrofutures are the only imaginable present.

So capitalism the revenant, the malevolent Jesus figure that refuses to die, son of the god-idol state, haunts us still, and forever shall haunt those for whom retrofutures are the only imaginable present.

Yet we still have triggers. We still have other manifestations of the trauma. For several years, for instance, myself had regular pain in my chest, despite there being nothing physically wrong: a hold-over from the night the boy toy cornered me the hallway of our house and pounded me on the chest repeatedly until myself collapsed and could no longer make my legs work, having to retreat by dragging myself up the stairs to my attic bedroom.

Heck, the creation of the universe was just the same, to hear my grandmother comment upon it. So perhaps aphant on both sides of the maternal family line.
Myself learned to recite important events, making narrative of them, to preserve factually what wasn't stored episodically. Hence my telling anyone who would listen what was happening at home. Not because intervention was ever going to come, but because otherwise the memories would not be retained in any form.
Wasn't until my late 20s that realized giving a recitation of my past abuse to every random stranger wasn't the way to form friendships. That was the strategy that had to be unlearned. (Still recite, just to myself.) This thread here is the first time have talked about that abuse in years, where once it was essentially how myself made introductions.

Once asked him about our ancestry, he went into an extended lecture about how three of his clients (he was an attorney), three brothers, came through different gates at Ellis Island and so had three different last names. The past, he explained, was all lies and half-truths, and so not worth putting any faith in. This was in lieu of answering my question about our ancestry.
That was pretty much the entire family, so far as myself knew it. At least until my sister quite literally tripped over a half-sibling neither of us ever knew, one day in a shopping mall.
Subsequently learned from the uncle we never knew that my grandfather did the exact sort of things my mother did. He'd tell my yet-to-be-father and his brother, employees of his, to paint a wall a certain color. Then as they were finishing the job, come through and yell at them demanding to know why they'd painted the wall that color. Just like my mother would demand to know why myself did a load of laundry using the settings she insisted be used a week prior, punishing me for daring to say it was on her instruction.

Not all folk with aphantasia have SDAM, but those with aphantasia, especially multi-sensory aphantasia, are much more likely to have SDAM than the general population.
Ask me to re-live an experience from a year ago, last month, earlier today, can't do it. My brain doesn't do mental time travel. Ask me to imagine my life in five years. Blank. Same reason. Brain doesn't brain that way.

If she didn't remember something, her strategy was to make the person who had found a strategy to keep track of that information out to be mistaken about their own experiences. Rather than admit to her inability to reflect upon her own.
Folk oft mistake SDAM for traumatic repression, because the latter is more common, and because it's barely been a decade since aphantasia was even named.
It makes therapy extremely challenging, as finding a therapist who will believe how our brains work is near impossible. We have trauma (everyone does), but it isn't in the form of repressed memories.

The boy toy, the youngest of seven brothers, moved out of his Italian-American mother's house, into my mother's bedroom, at the ripe age of eighteen, shortly after my sister responded to a spanking from our mother by turning around and laughing in her face.
He was her enforcer, for when the mental and emotional abuse and general neglect (e.g., we had no food in the house because she didn't eat food, only kitchen cabinets full of nutritional supplements) was insufficient to her desires, as it very often was not. She'd wind him up (he was also being mentally and emotionally abused by her) and stand and watch, sometimes silent, sometimes taunting me, or else disappear to her bedroom, presumably listening, while he broke the house and beat me.
Child me was never able to defend myself against him. Heck, even adult me would be pounded into the ground against teens and twenties him. But damn it if was gonna allow her to hit me again, however little force she could muster behind it. There was no answer to the mental and emotional abuse, but being struck had a ready recourse.
It just took reminding myself of that daily for months upon months to make it happen, as instinct it most certainly was not.

Coordinated as in bodily coordination, not conspiracy.
You targeted specific body parts (belly, balls, face, your own foot to remove a shoe, his mouth). To my dyspraxic brain, that's more coordinated than even trying to dance.
In any physical altercation myself have been involved in, it's all just a discombobulated blur of limbs with me flailing hopelessly, maybe managing to hit something solid, without taking in what it might have been, by sheer accident.
The idea of being able to process the movement of my own body, let alone the position of someone else's, during an episode of rage... 404. Tilt. Does not compute.

Yeah, per my reply, myself didn't really lose it from the bullying at home until was out and safe from that decade plus of abuse. Losing it only enough to hurl a book at school had only resulted in my being suspended, sent home, away from the only refuge had ever experienced, and told by my mother that they'd suspended me from school for good.
School administration and teachers were no help, despite being sympathetic, until the police finally took my abuse seriously, and the police didn't finally take my abuse seriously (had previously brought me right back home after a runaway attempt) until myself walked into the police station inconsolable, yet finally old enough to be articulate about what was happening to me, after several days of mental and physical torture, during that week of being suspended from school.

At the time, there were mass shootings in the news. We still called it "going postal". Someone had shot up a McDonald's a few years prior, and myself though that was my destiny, to one day snap and kill a lot of people. Not because of abuse in the moment, not because of bullying in the moment, but just because there was a lot of anger from past trauma, that had no where to go.
The last time anything like that happened was in college. Having no one that time to direct my rage toward, just spent several hours furiously kicking over trash cans in an empty Washington Square Park in the wee hours of the morning. At the end of the process, just felt very silly, and never had an episode like that again.

The closest comparison would be late teens. Was living in group foster home by then. Felt a rage building up for days, and wanted to just sit in the basement and fume. But the counselors had promised the other kids they'd all get a day at the mall. Told them that would not be a good idea to bring me along, but they weren't going to spare a counselor to babysit just me.
Sat on the edge of the lower level fountain at the mall, fuming. Some of the other kids stood on the upper level and started chucking pennies at me. Tore off chasing one of them (a girl that myself was quite close to, but she was the only one still present by the time myself got up the stairs), finally catching them at the other end of the mall, where the staff at Footlocker (in their referee uniforms) had to pull me off.

Yeah, this was early grade school, so had no context for understanding what was happening either.
Personally, would love to be able to say my meltdown (plural? no idea, recall* too little of childhood to say for certain) was due to autism, as that would indicate being part of a group of folk with common experiences.
But the more myself am educated about the lived experiences of autistic folk, the more clear it becomes that my neurospicy brain ain't fit that designation.
*Probably only recall that event because of the trauma afterward of being told that would not be coming back to the Quaker school. Though, of course, don't recall being told. Only the fact that being told happened.

So much juicy discussion that Mastodon has been hiding from me in the black hole of missing filtered notifications.
The thing about the "nerds rule the world" culture of the 90s is that it was about perquisition. A subculture of folk who had been abused for being weird and different were suddenly in positions where being weird and different gave them access to the perks granted to those few who possessed the secret knowledge that would build a new future.
Exchange-value was not the primary motivator, ego-value was. This was coupled with exchange-value, yes, but only as receipts. It was proof that being smart made one superior to those who tormented the smart kids.
It was about power and prestige, mediated by money, perhaps, but power and prestige, nonetheless.
But again, that was a generation ago. The triumphalism has passed, and the culture has become a syncretization of that old woundedness and an influx of folk who came into the industry simply because it was, for a time, the next doctor or engineer, drawn by status and promised job security (unmourned retrofuture promises) without any attachment to the pain of having been outsiders.
Naturalist cosmogony, which would flatten all explanation to a monolith ("capitalism"), does not leave space for lived history, reducing all past, present and future to an ahistorical narrative of fetish objects.

This being part of why myself, self taught in 6502 machine language on loose leaf notepaper as a child, felt so out of place, as most of the concerns of franchise fandom fell flat for me even then.
It was this culture, that thought of itself as the new status quo, that was subsequently hollowed out, leaving only the husk of what preceded it. By 2010, this hollowing out was already entering its second generation.

My freshman undergraduate CS class in 1992 consisted of students the majority of whom had never touched a computer keyboard before. They were there because the field looked like the next doctor or engineer.
Of course, the stolen-valor title inflation of people who have no professional responsibility for human life and even less liability if things go wrong as "engineers", an affectation driven largely by Usian companies like Google, an entire industry of folk cosplaying as Margaret Hamilton, didn't help that situation. Which, again, goes to the wounded masculinity and "nerds rule the world" of it all.
