Despite the shutters the living room has warmed to over 26 degrees and it turns out that 25 degrees is the line where we go from somewhat functional to *flump* Ofcourse the bedroom is at 28+ now which is definitely too hot. Hoping the rain tonight brings joy and is more than just a sprinkle that makes things muggier.

And if you can hang something over the outside of the windows, even better! Our house came with shutters on the ground floor and those things keep things a looot cooler than the upper floors.

I know a pro mechanic who has the Big Red Stack of Snap-On and is happy with the service because it's one fewer thing to worry about, but yeah that's a decades old established shop that's working with the stuff all day every day. You're not going to mess around with budget stuff at that level...

Great if you're an established pro and you just want the problem to go away, but for a beginner? Oof. There does seem to be a big urge to go for Snap-On, but that's an instant multiple thousands outlay before you even get to the more obscure tools. Yikes.

@vfrmedia@social.tchncs.de Yeah, exactly. And there's probably some peer pressure if you're a beginning mechanic to not turn up on the first day with a Halfords set, too... My first socket set was from the bargain bin, but trying to undo a brake caliper bolt on my first motorcycle turned my socket 12 into a socket 12.5. Didn't round off the bolt luckily... So I packed it all back up again and went to buy some proper tools. Good little basic set, that and a #24 socket for the axle went a loooong way on a Honda.

That only has to stand up to the occasional weekend session and my livelihood doesn't depend on it so I could get away with quite a lot of Lidl's Aisle of Wat, but even then it probably comes to a couple hundred already all in all.

If it's of any decentish quality that'll stand daily (ab)use it's likely to be more than just a few hundred quid, if it's not more like a few thousand. And then there's Snap-On, which is, yikes. But yes that's exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of, yes it's an investment that might serve you well, but it's also a hell of an outlay for a starting mechanic.

With tools that age relatively quickly (laptop) and/or are subject to wear and tear (van), it's nice to have this be Not My Problem. Specifically for laptops, I think it's advisable to keep business and pleasure firmly separated, for all kinds of reasons.

@pdcawley@mendeddrum.org It depends who's making the decision. On the one hand, yeah like you say owning your own tools gives you more control. On the other hand it's fashionable lately for companies to push the cost of the tools of the job onto their employees, ie delivery drivers being "contractors" and having to bring their own van. Depends on the size of the toolset I suppose. A van is a substantial investment, as is a laptop. Some hand tool vastly less to, but then again a whole tool set...

Reminds me of a previous workplace, where I had the proper sysadmin position of a basement office. Not as bad as it sounds as it did have a window that opened, except the bakery around the corner had a similar exhaust pointed straight at it. *Lovely* smell of fresh bread and apple pies, but distracting as hell and hungry all the time. ;-)

The one solitary headlight coming straight at you is hard to spot, if it’s moving it gets easier. If they wonder what the hell that idiot is doing they’ve at least seen you. 😁 Of course this does nothing if they’re not looking at all but there’s no helping that.

Assuming something isn't a thing when there's no evidence that it is a thing is a pretty safe, sane, scientific thing to do. It's the default, in a way. Whereas assuming something IS a thing despite there being no evidence whatsoever for it... ;-) When it's about self-propelled flying pigs, the answer is kinda obvious. When it's religion, things get weird...

You can't prove the counter hypothesis, because that would be proving that something doesn't exist, which, well good luck with that. ;-) There is just the base assumption that things in general don't exist unless there is some sort of evidence to the contrary.

@AvonVilla @inthehands You can never be 100% certain without proof. Luckily for the average atheist the standard isn't that high. I don't _have_ to prove a negative, in fact it's impossible. We've been banging on about this in very specific ways for millennia and so far I'm not seeing any evidence, thus comfortably consider the hypothesis not proven. ;-) The thing with him is that he was loudly and agressively certain, and a dick about it, which made him the annoying kind of religious person.

@stefano Ugh, yes. Looking ahead for even a year or so thinking about the maintainability of some web code is apparently already hard enough. But alarm systems are _infrastructure_. Those go in decades. A decade is a _loooong_ time in cloud... I'll remember this story the next time I'll be "dialing in" to our current alarm system at 9600 baud or whatever it is.

I thought I could reach Germany but I was wrong so had to fill up, with premium, on the A12 near the border. €2.71 per liter. Yikes. It’s gotten worse since then.

I'd replace it, but it's built into an elderly and somewhat shitty kitchen where all the appliances kinda suck. At that point, you're looking at doing a kitchen, which is a vastly bigger job, and hasn't happened yet.)

@miffyhelen The only thing I can think of that I’d use it for is monitoring the temperature from home assistant, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the feature set of an average “smart” fridge doesn’t actually allow that. So instead I stuck a cheap zigbee temp sensor in my dumbass fridge and called it good enough. (Not great because the battery runs down a bit quickly in the cold.)
