My partner bought a box of multi-coloured fruity popsicles and then took them out of the box, to sit loosely in the top basket of the chest freezer (a sensible decision: the box would not have fit neatly). I did not, however, take a moment to read the box before it went out with the recycling. So now I am here staring at the rainbow of colours and wondering whether a green one will be lime (my favourite), or melon (yuck), or green apple (meh). I might just make the safe decision and choose orange (which will 90% of the time be orange -flavour, my second-favourite, and only occasionally be mango, a perfectly acceptable choice also, if not as tasty as the citrus ones). Because if I open a green one and it is melon, it will go to waste, as I am home alone at the moment with no one to fob it off to. Really wish they just had labels on the sticks or something.

Can anyone from #Britain #UK please explain to me why every single beverage needs to have artificial sweeteners in it? I mean, I understand the impulse with sodas. I'd still rather have a real-sugar soda & just have them less frequently as a way of cutting down sugar, but I can understand that there's a "we need to find a way to get kids eating less sugar" issue, and kids don't have the impulse control and foresight to choose other things. But WHY in juice? Instant coffee? Lemon water?!?

One of my work-friends strongly recommended going to the charity shops while I'm in London on vacation (they are, indeed, very different from thrift shops in Canada!) and I found an absolute TREASURE: 4 balls of genuine wool/alpaca yarn for £10 altogether (they were marked at £3/ball but the boys at the counter insisted on only taking a ten since I was getting 4 of them). No cute new dresses or the like (I did try a few things on but nothing seemed like I'd get real wear out of it), but this one find makes the 3-ish hours spent going through a half-dozen shops MORE than worth it. #crochet #fibrearts #secondhand #naturalfibres

The British Museum treats so many of their ancient artifacts like a dog treats a chunk of human-food they swiped off the table when no one was looking. The descriptions on the wall don't even say what the item is, half the time, but they're REAL insistent that "WE HAD PERMISSION TO TAKE THIS, IT'S OURS, WE'RE KEEPING IT". Long-winded descriptions of how Lord-Such-And-Such took it WITH PERMISSION, and not even a listing of, say, which goddess this is a carving of. Colonialism is kicking and screaming over here.

It's starting to get mildly unsettling, how it never rains when I'm on vacation. Last year I spent over a week in Vancouver (raincouver!) and it didn't rain at all. Now I'm in London, England and there's a drought. Not any rain at all, in a place where umbrellas are sold on every street corner. My last 4 or 5 summer vacations, I haven't had a single day's plans get rained out on me. I'm getting a bit creeped out by it, to be honest. I even have a whole list of museums and art galleries to visit as "rainy day plans"!

@Lizette603_23@mastodon.social - when my dad hadn't yet gone blind (he gradually lost his vision and was legally blind by my early teens), and would sometimes take my brother and I on long bike rides on his days off. We would have been maybe 6/7 years old when this started, and continued it multiple times every summer until about 10/11 years old. We'd go along the shore road by the lake to the beach at the next town over, get the largest basket of fries from the little snack shack and put flaky salt and malt vinegar on them, walk along the pier, and then ride up into town and get milkshakes or ice cream at another shop, before riding home again along the rail trail. About a 15-16km round trip so nothing huge, but a lot of freedom compared to "normal" days.

My job is the MOST fun, sometimes! Spending the entire weekend at #TOFringe Festival and getting paid to do the easiest job imaginable (they need an extra body to sit beside a camera & babysit it during some of the archival recordings). Getting paid to watch 4 shows, and buying tickets to 4 others in-between while I'm there anyway. Yay summer! #Toronto #theatre

@anon98@infosec.exchange - I am not the friend you're looking for (I'm happily cis, sorry!) but I'd suggest the 519 community centre, sapphic aquatica nights at oasis aqualounge, joining a queer sports league or trivia team, and keeping an eye on church street venues' social media pages -- quite a few have women-and-trans centred events, although trans-only events are more rare. If you're more into quiet vibes instead of the bar/club scene try something like Understory Cafe perhaps? And the queer bookshop (Glad Day) is in a weird phase right now, but still keep an eye on them; they used to host some great stuff. Good luck!

The lack of physical space and the pressure to minimize everything in life (including your body) just proves how precious all of these things are. Having physical objects, having space for your things, having permanent housing of a reasonable size, being able to spread out and take space, being able to own stuff: these are all things that the 1% have been slowly taking away from us, while trying to convince us it's for "wellness" or the like. The inevitable consequence of those large-scale thefts is that some people are now left with very little, and that's not their fault.

A perfect ending to #Pride this year: watching a screening of #hedwigandtheangryinch at the Danforth music hall with friends, and then hearing John Cameron Mitchell (and others, because of course many of them live in Toronto; it was filmed here) speak about the film, tell anecdotes, and sing songs. Midnight Radio with the whole audience singing the final chorus, arms raised, made the world feel better for a moment.

Program 350-ish cues in 6 hours for 4 back-to-back kids' musical theatre presentations? That I've never gotten to see a rehearsal for, and have to program at full-tempo during their one and only dress run-through?Hell yeah; let's gooooo!

Helps that I know all 4 of these musicals pretty much by heart already because that's the 20 years experience you're paying for 😜

I love recital season ❤️

I try to work as many little dance shows, choir recitals, and end-of-school-year plays as I can during May & June, and it always brings me joy to watch kids discovering the joy of the stage. It heals something in my soul.

Today I get to watch 3 groups of choir kids do their final performances, and I couldn't be happier

@SeaFury@aus.social - metal, but NOT aluminum. Aluminum is too soft and gets scratched up, and then catches snags on the yarn. My favourite set are steel. Crocheter, mostly lacework, preference for natural fibres (recent obsession is bamboo rayon).

Front and center. Make it searchable. Use hashtags! Do NOT make me click a link to go to some outside site that I then have to search through in order to find the "about" page where your address is listed.

I'm not fucking doing that, and neither is anyone else.

There are SO many good artists out there, and I'm not doing a runaround on every single one to figure out if they're in a reasonable geographical area for me to day-trip to them.

Tag every single photo you post with your LOCATION. Because that will make me follow you. If you are a good artist AND local to me, I will keep your info and maybe book with you when I have time and money for more ink.

If you never let me know where you are, I might favourite a pretty picture, but I am NEVER going to book with you.

@ldottxt@kind.social - the pay being listed as yearly instead of as a clear hourly wage is a pretty clear indication that this ad was made using a template (or, worse, AI). They entered the hourly wage (both the minimum and the maximum they'd be willing to pay, but you'll be offered the minimum unless you can demonstrate you're worth far more) and the computer calculated what that would be at 40hrs/wk over a year. So you can do that math in reverse. 55k divided by 52 weeks in a year divided by 40 hours in a week is about $26.44/hr. So if you only work 20hrs a week? That's $27,500 a year.

I used to work with a guy who was very obviously dealing with some unmanaged (possibly undiagnosed) neurodivergence. He eventually got fired for ticking off other people we worked with/for, but I always personally had a pleasant working relationship with him. In the year or so since he was fired, we've chatted a few times about work-related things and his new job (same field, slightly different role, different company), and it sounds like he's figuring some of that mental health stuff out, slowly.

But now the awkward part. He's applying for a new, more permanent job, and asked me to be a reference... which I said yes to, because I realise how many other people we worked with would definitely say no. But I was also -slightly- motivated by the knowledge that this new job would involve a move to an entirely different province for him. Not because I don't want to see him again or anything sinister like that, but because I think he REALLY needs a fresh start with people who don't know anyone who would have disliked him. He kind of needs to escape the legacy of having annoyed people enough to fire him. And that feels kind of... bad? I dunno. I feel weird about it. Still going to give a good reference, but I almost feel manipulative doing it.

I happened to be working nearby both yesterday & today, and this "sculpture" (read: messy pile with no inherent design concept) was drawing unsafe crowds to the narrow sidewalks around this lot, with no crowd control or traffic control whatsoever, & large groups spilling dangerously out into the street. Haha, oh, my sweet summer child.

You underestimate what a treat it is to spend a night by myself, eating pizza bagels & watching Studio Ghibli, with absolutely no need to entertain anyone else.

Don't get me wrong -- I love my partners! But I love them a heck of a lot more when I get to be away from them sometimes.

Society expects us to live in each others' pockets, and to spend very little time alone. But for an introvert like me? Time all by myself, unobserved and unaccompanied, is an absolute necessity.

I love knowing that my more-extroverted partner is out getting their social needs met, while I'm having my delightful goblin-time.
