Wow, we give them the power to do horrendous things without overs8ght, then hand them all the information they need to do even more horrendous things, and then get all surprised if they do?
Microsoft and Meta (and Amazon, Google, also Apple) hasn't become as good as they are at circumventing or ignoring privacy rules for nothing. If somebody wants personal information as badly as these companies do, should that itself not raise a little bit of a red flag? No? Because they pinky-promised they'll never do anything bad with it unless it's profitable (and you dozed off again before the profitability clause came up)?
... Look, if you think the Stasi should not be getting some set information, then maybe don't hand 100 times that information to Microsoft.

Wasn't trying to say that others were "better". It really depends on what somebody needs/wants, or is able/willing to pay.
Posteo does have an amazing track record, though. The most private e-mail service possible, for more than 20 years now. If you want, you could even send them the money in an unmarked envelope, so they never even get your name or bank connection.
Regarding features, though, runbox does a lot more, of course.

For some diversity, you could also consider posteo.de (1€ per month), who don't even ask for your name, or mailbox.org (who also offer mail domains, online office and a few other features). Both cheaper than runbox, though with less storage space.
I'm using posteo.de in combination with a simplelogin subscription to have unlimited aliases, ad-hoc. Helps a lot!

That is actually a pretty good trajectory. It was at pretty much the worst possible state, though, in 2005.
I hope there's a good plan to not just get rid of the remaining coal power in short order but to do so without building more gas-fired plants, because once you build them, someone will cry foul if you want to shut them down again.

Historically, afaik, there was some actual preacher by the name of Jesus who got some modest amount of attention, was sentenced to death (like others in similar roles), and then became the symbol of a new political/religious movement, complete with miracles attributed to him and so forth At the time, I don't think a woman would have had much of a chance to take that role.
Actually, some of the views attributed to him were radically "progressive", which I find really interesting because *somebody* must have brought them up at the time, and others must have liked them. Especially given what various Christian churches made of them later... Humans *shrug*

Ich sehe die Bilder und denke, dass das ein Community-Wohnprojekt werden sollte. Interessante Leute, die sich das Gebäude teilen, selber werkeln um es zu renovieren und einzurichten. Und zwar für Menschen und nicht für Immobilienfirmen.

Not a strong counterpoint, but a counterpoint nonetheless:
Representing an image/idea of "who we are" is a fairly important way in which politics influences culture. So it's okay(-ish) of Biden to talk about it like that: You project a positive image, hoping for people to adopt it. Afaict, that method seems to work really well for Trump, and seemed to work alright for Obama and also for Bush before.
Of course, it only works if you don't just talk about who you are *not*, but about who you *are*, if that image appeals and is matched by your behaviour. My impression is that this is where Biden dropped the ball. Being "not Trump" isn't enough.
Me, I'd much rather focus on what people *do*, over who they *are*. Less judgemental, much easier to change.

Das sind nicht irgendwelche "linken Socken". Das sind Menschen, die einfach nur der Verfassung näher stehen als die Regierung. Aus Sicht der Regierung sind die vielleicht "links". Aus meiner Sicht zeigt es, dass Weimer sich viel gründlicher diskreditiert hat als er glaubt.

Jau ... hab diesen Tröt erst gesehen nachdem ich den vorherigen abgeschickt hab, und bin einverstanden.
Es geht mir nicht um intellektuelles Niveau sondern um Wahrheit, Selbstreflektion (was weiß ich sicher, was scheint klar, was vermute/befürchte ich, was ist meine Meinung? Und wann sollte ich diese Dinge mal anpassen?).
Ich hab mit 15 angefangen Terry Pratchett zu lesen und merke Jahrzehnte später erst, wieviel Sozialphilosophie/Humanismus/Politik da drinsteckt. Oder in den Simpsons. Primär unterhaltsam, nicht immer friedlich und nett, und definitiv ehrlich interessiert an der Guten Sache.

Ich glaube, die Uneinigkeit liegt im Wesentlichen in der Interpretation von "Boulevardpresse".
In meiner Wahrnehmung ist die definierende Eigenschaft: Zeig den Leuten was "DiE lEuTe" lesen wollen, mach es reißerisch und ruinier auf keinen Fall eine gute Story mit Fakten!
Angs, Hass, Titten und der Wetterbericht.
In so einem Konzept sind Empathie, Selbstkritik, und Ehrlichkeit hinderlich.
Wenn Du über einfach gehaltenen, gerne auch mal deutlichen, dabei dennoch immer kompetenten Journalismus sprichst: Klar, gerne! Emotionen sind menschlich, und die Hälfte meiner Playlist ist Punk, also gerne! Hau rein!
Das is blos halt nicht, was ich verstehe, wenn ich "wie Bild aber links" höre.

Glaubst Du dass "Die Leute" so blöd sind, dass sie halbwegs nuancierte Geschichten nicht kapieren?
Meine These ist, dass die meisten Leute irgendwann merken dass niemand sie ernstnimmt, und dass genau dass einer der Antriebe hinter der aktuellen Demokratiemüdigkeit ist.
Die Zeit zu lesen ist anstrengend. Das hab ich jahrelang gemacht und letztlich wieder seingelassen. Nicht weil die Tatsachen zu schwierig wären sondern weil manche Autoren so eingebildet schreiben.
Zum Glück muss man kein großer Zyniker sein, um es anders zu machen.

Ich habe null Problem alle zu integrieren. Ich find es enorm spannend, komplizierte Dinge für nicht-Experten begreifbar zu machen.
Womit ich ein Problem habe sind Lügen und implizierte Falschheiten.
Wenn ich Leute belüge damit sie meiner Meinung folgen, dann mache ich mich erstens angreifbar und zweitens bestätige ich damit das Lügen okay sind. Ich betrachte Wahrheit als wasimmer "der Gewinner" verbreitet, und das ist im Kern faschistisch: Das Recht des Stärkeren.
Wer zu "den Guten" gehören will darf nicht dieselben Mittel gebrauchen wie alle anderen. Das aufzugeben ist wieder so eine Ursünde: "Die anderen machen das also darf ich auch" (auch wenn die anderen das garnicht machen, aber kleine Lügen sind ja okay)

Nou, gelukkig is vanaf begin tot nu toe vrije mailsoftware nog altijd beter geweest dan die van Microsoft. Dus daar bestaat al een enorme keuze. Je eigen mailserver laten draaien is zo moeilijk niet, of anders even bij mailbox.org een huren. Alleen mail van Microsoft weg migreren is best lastig, en niet toevallig.

Voor mij is al jarenlang #KeePass (of KeePassXC) de oplossing, in combinatie met #SyncThing. KeePass slagt de wachtwoorden, passkeys en andere data locaal op (dus offline gebruikbaar), er is een plugin voor de browser om gegevens automatisch in te vullen, en syncthing zorgt ervoor dat ze op alle apparaten beschikbaar zijn, inclusief telefoon.
In plaats van syncthing zou je ook nextcloud files kunnen gebruiken. Zelfs dropbox of Google Drive, onedrive of wat dan ook.

Ich bin vor langer Zeit von ICQ nach XMPP diffundiert, und als Google und etwas später auch GMX das abstellten, dann eben Threema und Signal. Da bin ich seit etwa 10 Jahren, und das erzähle ich allen, die mich auf Whatsapp ziehen wollen. Manchmal wirkt es, manchmal auch nicht.
…das ist natürlich viel einfacher als schon tausend Leute auf WA zu haben und dann dort wegzukommen…
Viele Bekannte lesen meine Nachrichten auf Signal nicht, weil sie es so selten benutzen, dass Android der App die Berechtigung für Benachrichtigungen entzieht. Das hilft garnicht. Man kann das wohl abstellen, aber wenn ich anderen Leuten Techsupport geben muss, um mit ihnen reden zu können, wird es schwierig :(
Wie dem auch sei, zumindest meine Liste von Signal-Kontakten wächst.

Das klingt seehr bekannt. In meinem Fall war der Punkt an dem ich anfing mich zurückzuziehen die Berichterstattung über die US-Wahlen 2016, als Trump (für mich) unerwartet doch gewann, kurz nach dem Brexit-Votum (das ich als EU-Ausländer im Königreich miterlebte...). Ich kann es nicht wirklich Propaganda nennen, aber der Effetk war genau der beschriebene: Ich schaue/lese nur noch relative wenig Nachrichten, diskutiere kaum IRL, weil es so enorm anstrengend ist und "doch nichts ändert".
...dieses Gefühl zu erzeugen, dass die eigene Meinung eh egal wär, ist sicherlich ein Ziel von Propaganda. Und auch ein Effekt von enorm vielen anderen Dingen, absichtlich oder nicht.

The crazy thing is that this is true despite the fact that playing lottery is much more likely to make you poorer than netting you money.

That's a nice hope, but is there any chance they'll be good enough that most major phone manufacturers decide to ship their phones with general Linux instead of Android, before Google's new policy comes into force?
I'm happy to note that Fairphone has an option to buy their devices with /e/OS preinstalled, directly, and Shiftphone (Disclosure: I'm typing this on a Shiftphone) provides all necessary means to custom ROM developers to support them -- but much more than that is not likely to happen soon.
Unless some actual law or sufficient bad publicity stops Google, they'll just force people to decide between the Google world and the free software world, and then you're either in or out. Not happy.

Another way to look at it:
"Everybody should just ..." has never been a viable sution to any problem.
Not because not enough people care (which may also be the case) but because most people don't have the capacity to avoid all the things they "should" be avoiding, do all the things they "should" and still lead a healthy life.
The brain surgeons need to keep brain surgeoning, they can't "just" switch everything to Linux in their spare time. And cook wholesome healthy meals themselves, and fix their devices themselves, and walk to work, and work out, and take more time for their families, and set up their own NextCloud and e-mail servers, and...

Positiv: gefälschte Nachrichten mit plausibel aussehenden Fotos von anderen Orten oder vom falschen Zeitpunkt lassen sich schneller enttarnen.
Gaanz schlimm: Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple... werden früher oder später alle Fotos die sie greifen können auf diese Weise analysieren, und ebenso die US-Regierung, die chinesische, russische... und sie werden alles was sie finden zum eigenen Vorteil einsetzen.

Der für mich wichtigste Unterschied ist, dass niemand mehr stundenlang suchen und nachdenken muss, sondern eine einigermaßen genaue Antwort per Knopfdruck erzeugt wird.
Datenanalyse und Verletzung von Datenschutz sind immer dann am potentesten bzw. gefährlichsten wenn sie automatisiert und massenhaft passieren können.
Das ist ein Geschenk für Mega-Konzerne und unfreundliche Regierungen, und potentiell enorm gefährlich für alle anderen.

Ja, ben het er eens mee.
Er zou uiteindelijk een handleiging moeten zijn waar je ook voor troubleshooting terecht komt, tenminste voldoende voor simpele problemen en voorlopige diagnose, plus verwijsen naar volledige documentatie -- die vaak echt niet slecht is maar bijna altijd nog beter kan, vooral voor beginners.

Dat vind ik enorm leuk!
Ik denk er al een tijd over na om meer dingen zelf te hosten, zou het wel ook kunnen, maar de tijd om na te lezen hoe het moet en het dan ook in goede orde te brengen... als er al een geschikte handleiding was zou ik dat erg leuk vinden.
Zou ook onderdelen van je handleiding kunnen beta-testen, feedback geven of met vertalingen naar Duits of Engels helpen.
Voor mij het belangrijkst: Nextcloud, Pixelfed, Mumble, en misschien een blog (static, niet WP)

Als je de ICC bent moet toch echt proberen om onafhankelijk te blijven. Dat ws echt en stomme keuze, om de bewijzen bei Microsoft op te slagen, enorm stom.
...nou ja, daar zijn al redelijk geschickte alternatives voor, gebaseerd of Linux en enorm robust. Het lastigste probleem is misschien hoe je de hele data van Azure en MS office weg migreren kunt…

Sadly, I can't promise I'll never dissappoint you because I'm also not half as tuned-in to what others may or may not need to hear/read from me as I'd like to be. I'm told that's unavoidable with humans and not to worry too much -- but when it goes wrong, it doesn't hurt any less.
So ... yes, I'm happy to support anyone's right to be who they want to be (exceptions for racists, faschists and suchlike), and my world *needs* more diverse, weird people.

I really wanted there to be a form to fill out to specify what was lost, when, on what train etc.. Having to call and wait 15 minutes before having to spell the brand name of my gloves to someone on a low-quality phone call may even have reduced my chances because I got home before the train arrived at its final destination. But by the time the call was through, there's no telling where the train was.

Also, when I lost a glove recently, I directly called the customer hotline, and they noted the train number and where on the train it was etc., and told me they'd look for it directly.
...unfortunately without success, but you never know.

...dummerweise wohne ich in den Niederlanden (und die Bank hat ihren Sitz in Belgien). EU-Recht ist überall dasselbe, und die Bank hat Kunden in der ganzen EU ... wäre es in Ordnung, den Deutschen Verbraucherschutz anzusprechen?
Alternativ: Wissen Sie, wo ich in den Niederlanden entsprechende Unterstützung bekommen kann? Kenne mich hier in dieser Richtung leider fast garnicht aus.

I'd really appreciate if you could put some links in your toots, so those who are like me can read up on the topic at hand.
Also to make it easier to tell the difference between facts and mis-/disinformation. I don't expect any falsehoods here but lots of alarming messages are spread these days mixing important concerns with falsehoods. That should get harder if all the good people cite their sources.

Not really solving the problem, but maybe a way to bypass parts of it: In many instances, there are little to no drawbacks to closing/phasing out an old user account and opening a new one (as needed).
I try to avoid customer accounts, and usually use throwaway adresses from #simplelogin. Every now and then, I switch to a new alias, and once the warranty phase for my last purchase at some place has passed, I delete my account with them and/or chuck the old alias.

well that idea about compassion is exactly what these former employees dispel, comprehensively. Amazon uses their customers' compassion because it makes them money. If it made them money, they would also happily ruin those non-profits. Actually, mqybe they do, but they wouldn't talk about it, of course.
That's not compassion, that's pragmatism, leading to one positive externality, which they're milking for PR.

I'm not sure if that shouldn't also apply to dogs. After all, dogs get people to get up at crazy hours and walk through the rain, every day...
More factually, cats and dogs have evolved alongside humans, which means adjustments on both sides. You couldn't domesticate a wolf or a fox, (and most people wouldn't want to, either). So cats/dogs and humans have developed some attraction to each other.

Big Oil companies have an institutional bias, even if (if!) the majority of their employees think they're improving things as fast as possible. There is simply a business case to keep profiting from fossil fuels as much and as long as possible, and it's hard to argue against that within the company.
You don't invite the Mafia to an anti-corruption summit, is what I'd say. You might want to offer witness protection and such, but you must get rid of the organisation.
