Spotlight has recently become terrible for launching apps after being so good for years. Now when I type something like Cal or Calendar or even Calendar.app I have to manually select the actual app in the list, if it even appears. Should be first thing. Just me? Is my Mac haunted? Probably haunted.

@brentsimmons Mine shows most of the time "search on app store"

@brentsimmons your Mac and every old mid western theatre: haunted.

@brentsimmons Nope, not just you. I also get a serious delay in the list being generated, even when the result is unambiguous. I type “1password” (for example) and wait 10–15 seconds for anything to happen. Often the list does actually include the thing I’m typing! But not always.

@brentsimmons seems to be something happening to you… I'm on 26.3.

@brentsimmons not great for some years for me.

  • @brentsimmons oh good - it does it when I’m teaching and I’ve told my students my Mac is haunted. It also made me wonder if I should buy a new Mac when the M5’s appear. Your post makes me think “nope”

@brentsimmons yep, same here. Everything is terrible.

  • @brentsimmons not you. It can't find files I know are there. Doesn't show apps. It's just awful since Tahoe

  • @brentsimmons have you tried to set up the shortcut actions? you can literally tell the system “calsh” means “run my cal script” and it will still make you scroll. Wild.

@brentsimmons Yep, broken for me too. After years of telling people to just use spotlight instead of some special launcher app, I get finally proven wrong.

@brentsimmons I would suggest considering Alfred. I never left it so I’ve neatly sidestepped the trouble you’re describing

@brentsimmons It's even worse if you happen to have magnetic hard drives attached to your Mac. It doesn't show any apps until after all the drives have finished spinning up to read the index files.

@brentsimmons for me it helped to clear the Finder’s cache, forcing it to reindex

@brentsimmons I agree, probably haunted. I've tried Alfred, and I'll probably try it again at some point because it's clearly an excellent product, but I keep coming back to Keyboard Maestro. Part of it is that I've invested a lot of time setting up what I called "double hotkeys" back in 2014. https://www.notesfromandy.com/2014/08/01/double-hotkeys-with-keyboard-maestro/

@brentsimmons Not just you. I switched over to Alfred sometime back and this was one among several reasons.

  • @brentsimmons I couldn’t search for Safari in Spotlight since Tahoe Betas. Every release I kept updating the Feedback - ginally got fixed with the 26.3 release.

@brentsimmons Not just me. I had a similar issue about a year ago. Switched to Raycast for that very reason.

@brentsimmons I’ve noticed this as well - although once I gave up hope and just rebooted, and that worked…so, that’s my advice. 😂

@brentsimmons not just you. If I search for “1pa” I usually get calculator instead of 1Password.

@brentsimmons Rebuilding the index by following these steps fixed a similar issue for me: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102321 I think maybe a week later it got bad again, so I did the steps a second time and it has been fine since.

@brentsimmons random Apps my Mac have become invisible to Spotlight. No idea what happened and few attempts are fixing it has done nothing

@brentsimmons Nope. What seems to happen now with the old muscle memory of typing in a few characters and hitting return is that my mac tries to launch the app on my iPhone via iPhone mirroring (if I have the app on both Mac and iPhone). Just the tip of the iceberg.

@brentsimmons It’s always been terrible for me, mostly really slow. Used Alfred for many years, then switched to @raycast and I couldn’t be happier.
