  Some tech stuff is painful enough to “learn” it once and just keep reusing the same code/patterns over and over for years. This is to say I added some new #SwiftData stuff to my app today, adding some fairly trivial schema migrations. It’s just too tedious to search for improvements or better ways to do things. It works, but as with many #SwiftUI things it does not leave one feeling overly confident. #iOSDev #MacOSDev

  My current nagging issue with iPadOS 26 is when you use the keyboard to call up a search with cmd-space it never allows typing until you do it a second time

  Another“it just works” fail with iPadOS 26 is the pointer (trackpad/keyboard attached) often disappears due to it’s tint matching the current app colors.

  If your Apple Home devices stop working you may need to restart your AppleTV. Because of course you do* *The reason is the AppleTV may be your home hub and something isn’t right. Not sure what goes wrong but twice now this has resolved problems I was experiencing. Unclear if this affects people using another device as the hub. <Shrug>

  In #Xcode you can quickly remove simulators using unneeded OS versions by removing their OS version in Settings -> Components -> Platform So if you have several iPhone 17 sims for iOS 26.0, 26.0.1, 26.02, etc and only want to keep 26.4 delete the other platform versions and the simulators will be removed from the list in Devices & Simulators. You can always reinstall older OS versions and devices later if/when needed. I need to remind myself of this with each clean up....

  It appears the latest #Xcode and associated frameworks allows my native #SwiftUI Mac app to work with Liquid Glass for the most part. With OS 26.0 the app would just crash and I have not even bothered to revisit this for a few OS updates. Work to do but at least it functions for certain definitions of function. Naturally the latest Apple spawn introduces 2 new Swift Concurrency “errors”. i.e. things that work fine but annoy the compiler One step forward and two steps back. Joy. #macOSDev

  Touched grass or pine needles actually. Quick overnight in the #Catskills. Yes, there is a burn ban but campfires are allowed and things were so damp this fire never got any bigger nor did it burn very long.

  Less than 24 hours to turn the promising news of the end of the Tim Cook era at Apple into why John Ternus has to do these 9000 things for AI. God I hate this timeline. Apple just needs to go back to making good consumer software and not chasing services, stock charts and quarterly results. Make great things. Stop rent seeking with every new feature. I suppose we should just end capitalism too while we're at it.

  If Apple is really going to remove UI compatibility mode in the next Xcode (the ability to opt out of liquid ass) that will probably be the death of at least one of my apps. The UI is too complex and Liquid Glass just fails in horrific ways. I very much resent Apple forcing work on developers. Actively killing apps is totally unacceptable. This would be a completely different discussion if everything in LG, SwiftUI, SwiftData, etc actually worked. #iOSDev #macOSDev

  I just spent a week with older relatives that are lost so deep in the Fox News alternate reality that most of the time you don’t even know what they are talking about. If you engage, most of your time is wasted saying “that’s not true”, “you’ve omitted about 90% of the information” or “what are you even talking about”… This is a post about AI true believers and grifters.

  I’ve become very good at muting things in my timeline (thanks #tapestryapp) I also very quickly scroll past things I don't want to read (mostly AI nonsense) from people I don't want to mute entirely. Recently, I've started just deleting all my coding newsletters unread as they've also reached a tipping point of AI crap vs useful info. I can't wait for this bubble to pop. I pray the next techo-scam is something outside my sphere so I am spared the fireh...

  Perhaps Apple should waste some of the time/budget currently being used for AI projects to build a bot that updates Feedback tickets. Just have the bot post an add for the F1 movie to your ticket or something. Anything would be better than the current system of submitting bugs into the void. Or perhaps once a bug report reaches a milestone like 5 years without an update you get 10% off one of those fancy cleaning cloths?

  Before I was a developer, I was an Architect. I designed custom homes for many, many people. I was good at it. I got tired of telling a builder what to do. I wanted to be more hands on with my craft so I changed careers to actually create the end product. This AI nonsense feels just like telling someone else what to build when I would rather do it myself. I enjoy the process. I’ll write code as a hobby and farm goats but I'm not giving up something I enjoy.
