Folks, there's an account on mastodon.social that is using my name and reposting me on repeat. It's not me. Please block and report.

New spam account pattern to look out for, Masto admins: Overnight we got two account requests using the names of existing users whose accounts have gone inactive, with a number tacked on the end. Email addresses were unrelated throwaway accounts. #mastoadmin

Finally sitting still and reading MAGNIFICA HUMANITAS, and when I tell you how my breath caught at “the preferential option for the poor” (§14) nestled in amongst the standards for discernment we should develop for our collective future… I am here for liberation theology. Bring it, Leo.

Time to update the numbers in my book talk again. Thanks for continuing to provide the instructive examples, MSU.

Friends, hcommons.social is getting a lot of suspicious account requests. If you or folks you know want to create an account with us, please ensure that your answer to the question of why you want to join our community tells us something about you and your relationship to our work. And please try to avoid throw-away email addresses. We promise not to spam you, but we need to know that you're not a spammer (or scammer, or troll, or bot) too.

The latest fashion in bot account requests: Text lifted from a random existing Mastodon user's profile. Some of them are plausible. Admins beware!

If a mid-level manager is ruled to be ineligible to join the faculty union, does that preclude said mid-level manager from going on strike?

I’m in the early stages of a new writing project, asking not how to fix higher education in the US but what we should do if it can't be fixed. This paper, presented at February's ACLA, represents the dipping of one toe in those waters. Comments *definitely* desired. https://kfitz.info/after-the-end/

This post gets at the complexity of deploying a major upgrade to a live program, and why we’re so glad to have a team on multiple continents working to make sure everything will go well when we do it for real. Not incidentally, it also makes clear why we’re so excited about the update even though the real improvements are to off-stage behavior. Thanks for this, @mpe! https://hcommons.social/@mpe/116499773889473696

I spent some time yesterday noodling about Amy Schiller's THE PRICE OF HUMANITY and the questions it raised for me about US higher education’s interpellation into the ideology behind Effective Altruism. https://kfitz.info/humanities-philanthropy-good-life/

Time for a new #introduction post, as much of my last one has changed! I’m Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Arts and Letters at Michigan State University. I’m founder and Director Emerita* of #MeshResearch, a lab building open-source interoperable tools for new forms of scholarly communication. I'm also director of Knowledge Commons, a scholarly network serving knowledge creators from across the disciplines and around the world. https://hcommons.org My...

Our friends at @investinopen have posted a case study of our attempts to create real sustainability for Knowledge Commons: https://investinopen.org/blog/building-the-commons-how-knowledge-commons-is-navigating-challenges-through-community-and-collaboration/ I'm enormously grateful to @lbcollister for this story and for IOI's tireless cheerleading for sustainable open infrastructure.

Just FYI: this is part of the damage being done by extractive AI companies. Their scraper bots routinely DDOS us, and they multiply to take up as much bandwidth as is available. We are having to put a huge percentage of our developers’ time into just keeping the site alive rather than building its future. They are actively destroying everything worthwhile about the internet. @hello https://hcommons.social/@hello/115854618561953712

There are many research hosting services out there. Lots of them want to host your work in order to mine it for profit. Knowledge Commons wants to build a coalition of researchers, teachers, students, and more, in order to resist the authoritarian effort to undermine public access to knowledge. Please join us by visiting https://hcommons.org, creating an account, and sharing your work with the world. And if you like what you find and want to support our efforts, become a KC Champion! I am delighted to share that Knowledge Commons has received another generous gift from our friends at Digital Scholar. This gift will help us continue to support researchers who want to resist the corporate enclosure of their work -- but we still need your help, too. https://about.hcommons.org/2026/02/03/digital-scholar-donates-20000-to-knowledge-commons-and-why-that-gift-matters/

I am enormously grateful for our colleagues at @digitalscholar and their commitment to open scholarly infrastructure -- both their own projects and the projects like Knowledge Commons that they help support. Nonprofit, community-oriented platforms are crucial to an open future for knowledge creation, sharing, and preservation, but many such platforms (ahem) are struggling in the current funding landscape. I hope that you'll consider supporting the free and open tools and services that yo...
