My mini-rant yesterday about the iOS 27 beta crashing bug turns out to have been late — the bug was already fixed in the latest beta, iOS 27 beta 4 build 24A5390f. (Or, at least, I have no logs for this crash that reference 24A5390f.) I’ve updated my blog post with the good news: https://inessential.com/2026/07/23/ios-27-nnw-crash.html

I was curious about NetNewsWire for iOS usage per iOS release. Here are the percentages: iOS 26: 92.17% iOS 18: 6.28% iOS 17: 1.23% iOS 16 and earlier: 0.32% (The current version of NetNewsWire for iOS runs on iOS 17 and newer.)

I was called away from home (back now) for unexpected reasons. Here’s what it looks like to fly into Minot, North Dakota in the evening. Note the many sloughs this time of year. Here’s the jail in Benedict, North Dakota. My trip was not actually related to the jail! I just thought it was cool.

We had to wait for a slow-moving train in Voltaire, ND on our way to Anamoose. https://www.anamoose.com/home.php

This time of year in North Dakota things are more brown than green. The farmhouses almost always have trees planted around them for relief from the wind.

Fuck this translucency shit. Not sure how this has made my content front and center.

Before sending Apple any money this week, remember that Tim Cook attended a private screening of the Melania documentary at the White House later in the same day that Alex Pretti was murdered by this administration. He knew about it and went anyway.

What breaks my heart about LLMs is that when I teach it something about coding, I’m not teaching a person. And the LLM is going to fucking forget anyway.

Two things I didn’t note in my post on Objective-C but could have: the compiler is crazy fast, and the debugger is wonderfully smooth, without all the latency we’ve become used to the last bunch of years. The whole experience feels so different — so light and easy.

Spotlight has recently become terrible for launching apps after being so good for years. Now when I type something like Cal or Calendar or even Calendar.app I have to manually select the actual app in the list, if it even appears. Should be first thing. Just me? Is my Mac haunted? Probably haunted.

NetNewsWire 7.0 has been waiting for review for a day now. Is it random or is it a flood of vibe-coded apps slowing down the review system?

NetNewsWire 7.0 for iOS has finally passed through the review process. It may take a few hours to propagate — but it should be on the App Store now or soon-ish 🎸
