@rnd@toot.cat use a language with type inference. e.g. type ascriptions in Haskell are very rare, although it is obviously statically typed. it's also extremely concise to begin with.

@rnd@toot.cat someone once scolded me at an exhibition for typing really aggressively on my BBC Micro. I explained that this was because I first used one when I was about six, and that was just how I've always typed on it.

@rnd@toot.cat 1/2 uh, since most of the code I wrote was in C, and most of the remainder was in the multifarious languages associated with C (make, imake, sh, C++, M4, sed, awk, ...), I am obligated to point out that C's type system has many clauses, some famous and some infamous, in which the behavior is implementation-defined (which means your implementation was expected to document the behavior, but probably didn't), or undefined behavior, which means anything can happen.
