@Lkdc I only got my US citizenship in my 20s so I know the Schengen area through the visa I would have to get to travel to Europe which is no longer a concern to me since my US passport lets me in visa free now. I think not needing that visa has made USAians less familiar with the term than people in other countries.

@Lkdc USian here. It's likely that I wouldn't know about the Schengen area if not for #JetLagTheGame: The main objective in the game is to visit as many Schengen Area countries in six game days. @Lkdc Okay, check me if I am wrong, please: for Americans who don't really know what it is, I would roughly equate it to our ability to go back-and-forth between states without having to go through a border check. Not quite the same, because states aren't countries, but a similar freedom of movement and commerce -- even though there are things that are legal in certain states that are not legal in neighboring states, so that is always a consideration. (How did I do?)

@Lkdc knew of the open border travel policies. Did not know it had a name. Have friends who seemed to travel a lot without much concern. Was always envious of their disposable income and access to freedom of movement across borders.

@Lkdc I'm from Australia and my favourite hobby is laughing at the ignorance of Seppos, however, while I know about the Schengen Area, I feel like knowledge of it in Australia would only be marginally better than in the US.

@Lkdc So I knew _about_ it, having taken the train between multiple European countries.. but I didn't know it had a name. I voted "never heard of it", but now that I looked it up that's not entirely accurate.

@Lkdc I know of it because my American kid did a semester in Berlin and there was an issue with counting how many consecutive days in various countries were permitted on his visa Also, I have multiple friends seeking residential status outside the US, and there was excitement over Gibraltar maybe becoming (partially?) part of Schengen back in August

@Lkdc Here's a Tom Scott bit on a bridge that by treaty happens to be in two countries. There also happens to be a museum to the Schengen Area, and he includes clip of the collection of the hats from the border guards uniforms that were no longer needed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mw44wHG4KOc

@Lkdc there are many Americans who have never left the U.S. The % with passports has grown in recent years, given cheap flights (compared to cost of inflation, flights haven’t risen as much) to different places, but it’s still only about half that have passports. I’m very familiar with it as an American who lives in Spain, and was familiar with it long before moving here. You can also see based on who the nation elected President, facts aren’t a strong suit for some! 🤷🏼♀️
