New from Andrew Joseph Pegoda: In an attempt to overcomply with #Texas law, the University of #Houston will eliminate over 100 women's studies, gender and sexuality courses from the core curriculum. It won't be enough to appease extremist Republicans. https://www.texasobserver.org/university-of-houston-ends-gender-sexuality-courses-op-ed/ #education #TXlege #LGBTQIA #LGBTQ #women #GulfCoast #law #politics #USpol #news

Last week, from Mezabahnur Masum: Texas cities are not indifferent to climate change. Instead, time after time, their careful plans for the future are blocked by #Republicans in the legislature. https://www.texasobserver.org/texas-cities-climate-plans-preemption/ #TXlege #Texas #ClimateChange #environment #news #politics #USpol

Featured story: The number of Texas public #schools facing closure more than doubled from 2024 to 2025, from 22 to 50. And in the first six months of 2026, #Texas school districts have voted to close even more schools—at least 55. https://www.texasobserver.org/school-closures-across-texas-not-local-failure/ #education #Texas #politics #USpol #news #TXlege

"Despite their annual visits to the Hill and efforts to share their stories with lawmakers, abortion advocates have struggled to break through in a Congress that, since Dobbs, has lacked the numbers to roll back state bans or otherwise loosen restrictions." https://www.texastribune.org/2026/07/06/texas-abortion-landscape-dobbs-v-jackson-four-year-anniversary-congress/ #healthcare #ReproHealth #ReproJustice #pregnancy #abortion #txlege #UScongress #USpol

"Health insurance costs on businesses have gotten so high that leadership in both chambers of the state Legislature have charged lawmakers with offering solutions ahead of the legislative session beginning in January. And there’s bipartisan support to drop costs." https://www.texastribune.org/2026/07/06/texas-healthcare-cost-business-legislature/ #healthcare #insurance #business #restaurants #texas #txlege #USpol

"The Chronicle reviewed the websites of the 21 most-expensive or top-rated schools in the area that are not participating in the voucher program. The review found that only about half the schools had publicly posted an explanation why they chose not to join the program. Fifteen of 21 schools not participating did not respond to a request for comment about their decision." 🎁🔗: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/education/article/elite-private-schools-vouchers-21294985.php?utm_source=marketing&utm_medium=copy-url-link&utm_campaign=article-share&hash=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuaG91c3RvbmNocm9uaWNsZS5jb20vbmV3cy9ob3VzdG9uLXRleGFzL2VkdWNhdGlvbi9hcnRpY2xlL2VsaXRlLXByaXZhdGUtc2Nob29scy12b3VjaGVycy0yMTI5NDk4NS5waHA%3D&time=MTc3NDI2OTk4MDU3MQ%3D%3D&rid=MDcyMjg5MTAtNzRlYS00OGUyLTlmODQtNjI5ZTE0Zjg0MzRi&sharecount=MA%3D%3D #PublicHealth #education #schools #PrivateSchools #vouchers #texas #txlege
