After a few months of work, slackfetch has reached a mature 1.0 release. A minimal and readable system information utility for Slackware, inspired by ufetch. The normal output and a cowsay -n composition are shown below. https://forge.slackware.nl/r1w1s1/slackfetch #Slackware #Linux #Unix

BTW #Slackware buddies, is there a simple special trick to have #Slackbuilds install in /usr/local rather than /usr? Like some environment variable to set before running the slackbuild script? The idea is to keep native slackware fs "sane" and add all extra stuff elsewhere.

So. Hauptrechner läuft mit EndeavourOS (Arch), Laptop 1 läuft mit Linux Mint mit XFCE und Liquorix-Kernel. Laptop 2 kriegt jetzt Fedora XFCE. #Linux #Mint #Fedora #Arch #Gentoo #LFS #Slackware

Trying out NextSpace on Slackware -current with XLibre. A modern implementation inspired by the classic NeXTSTEP desktop. It's interesting to see how its design and workflow still feel relevant decades later. Definitely a fun project to explore. #Slackware #NextSpace #XLibre #Unix #X11

@cstross@wandering.shop @foone@digipres.club I do remember there was an additional wrinkle in that the (donated) box I was trying to install #Slackware onto was a PS/2 and the MCA architecture wasn't officially supported by the Slackware installation disks. And astonishingly, I think I may have found a copy of the document I had to follow in order to hack the installation to work. https://www.linuxjournal.com/article/2037 Looking back and considering it was my first real experience with installing Linux, it's astonishing I got it to work. But it did, and that machine became my daily driver for the next few years. #linux #sysadmin

#Slackel #SlackelMATE #Slackware #Linux #MATE #OpenSource #32bit #RetroComputing #LinuxNews #TechNews

Depressing (no, not really) how simple managing #LXC containers on #Slackware Linux is once… you know how to manage them 🙄🤣

Done and dusted. I've created SlackoSundries, my totally random collection of Slackware pkgs. Right now: brave-origin-beta, the fresh-editor and bottom, a great h or btop replacement. Updates where apllicable very Wednesday and Saturday. You can find it here: #slackware https://codeberg.org/thesaigoneer/SlackoSundries

Procrastination might sound wasteful, but it's actually great Slackware Mango/Niri up and running, with all extensive goodies from the slackosaurus. Received some great feedback during my travails, so all's dandy now. That leaves Gentoo dwm for tomorrow, and luckily enough that's a public holiday here. Or was it already in the back of my mind? 🤔 Probably 🥳 Cheers! 🍻 #slackware

Order restored. Experimental KDE by @jloc0@mastodon.sdf.org Flatpaks as applications. Kernel 7.0. Slacker0ni repo for all goodies. Homebrew and/or distrobox possible also. As immutable as a mutable distro gets. #slackware

Have been playing around with #Fedora on the spare machine, I think it's pretty cool. I remember the old days with RedHat Linux. I think 6.1 was my first. That said, I think I'm moving the spare machine to #Slackware. I've been itching to dive back into the OG distro that I learned Linux on. I remember buying a giant 50 pack of floppy disks (they were blue, orange, yellow, green, and red and I bet lots of people know exactly the bundle of floppies I'm talking about here) and went to the local library that had the ability to FTP. Eventually I got Cable Internet and downloading ISOs of Slackware became real. But in the late 90s, if I wanted to get all the sets for Slackware, it was a visit to the local library.

Sigo feliz!

This week's Linux and FOSS news: LINUX NEWS elementaryOS dev announces to comply with California law to avoid fines: https://mastodon.online/@danirabbit/116250765623660340 (I mean, losing a source of income is a valid concern on her part, but it doesn't justify that she risks the privacy of the users. Even though she says in a reply that asking for ID is different, I wouldn't be so sure at this point that she won't consider implementing that too, just to stay in business.) Fedora Project Leader Suggests Linux Distros Could Adopt Apple's Age Verification API: https://itsfoss.com/news/fedora-leader-suggests-age-verification-api/ (Adopting a big tech corp's API? What the hell did he smoke? It's even worse than the Systemd stuff. I already had some trust issues with Fedora, but now it becomes pretty obvious, that they shouldn't be trusted) Devuan rejects compliance: https://xcancel.com/jaromil/status/2034694340249821329 (Now this is great to see. I'm considering getting away from Systemd due to their attitude to comply, Devuan is the primary distro I consider, because it would let me keep the Debian base but get rid of Systemd at the same time.) Slackware also rejects compliance: https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/how-is-ab-1043-going-to-impact-slackware-4175762747/page15.html#post6626190 (3 Systemd-free distros not complying at this point, there are quite a few distros to go to.) And ZorinOS too: https://forum.zorin.com/t/statement-about-age-verification-laws/61052 (A really good summary of this whole age nonsense, a worthy read) Kicksecure/Whonix changes plan, "unlikely" to comply, after user backlash: https://www.kicksecure.com/wiki/Age-api#status Inside the Systemd Age Verification Debate: Developer Responds to Criticism: https://itsfoss.com/dylan-taylor-systemd-controversy/ (I think he isn't the one to blame here, but rather the Systemd project. If he didn't do it, someone else would do it. That's what we get from a corporate-backed project I guess. Harrassing him won't do anything, it's just naive, childish behavior.) Someone Forked Systemd to Strip Out Its Age Verification Support: https://itsfoss.com/news/systemd-fork-strips-out-age-verification/ (more Linux and FOSS news in comments) #WeeklyNews #News #Linux #LinuxNews #AgeVerification #elementaryOS #Fedora #Devuan #Slackware #ZorinOS #Kicksecure #Whonix #Systemd #FosseryTech

Anyone for the outdatedness of Slackware? My Slackware Tilers setup runs Sway, with the nwg-shell. And Mangowc with Noctalia. And Niri with Dank. Hyprland is available, but not installed. And Slackware Current. All from one iso and repository by @jloc0@mastodon.sdf.org . Smart thing: package sets are linked by symbolic links. Type "slackpkg install dank" and you'll see all related packages before they're pulled in. Way less 'dependency hell'. And very much up to date 😄 Thanks Jay! #slackware #niri #mangowc #nwgshell
