OMG you guys holy CRAP nerdgasm WHY DID NOBODY TELL ME ABOUT #HELIBOARD So I've been on #GrapheneOS for three years. Never touched Android before that. I installed OpenBoard on day one, based on what I took to be the consensus. Liked it very much. Today it started acting up. Baffling. Decided to uninstall/reinstall. Not listed in #fdroid ... because the repo has not been touched in FOUR YEARS Cut to me trying FlorisBoard (also impressive, except it currently lacks text suggestions, dealbreaker) and settling on HeliBoard. Not only does it cram in ALL KINDS of how-did-I-live-without-it functionality, but the design exposes all of it with gentle discoverability. A SHOWPIECE of #foss #floss #libresoftware https://github.com/HeliBorg/HeliBoard

In my replacement of apps on both my computer and phone with #FOSS apps, I'm content with every alternative, even after a while for some. Some are even way better than the proprietary ones. However, for my phone, I miss how snappy and smart Gboard is (my phone keyboard). I have #Heliboard, it is nice and all. But I'm a heavy texter, Gboard makes me text seamlessly.though I understand it's this good because of the immense amount of users data they collect without consent. So, I guess, I'll stick to the principle, and use Heliboard.

If you're interested in open-source glide/swipe typing then Heliboard has implemented background, per-app opt-in data gathering for building such a library. Edit: it's important to read or watch the information about this projects the developer has linked below. https://github.com/HeliBorg/HeliBoard/releases #Android #Heliboard

#Heliboard 4.0 just released on github; it will be on fdroid soon. 4.0 includes opt-in background data gathering! Collecting gestures from daily use has some privacy risk; I made a video about how to leverage our privacy safeguards. Boosts please! PT: https://makertube.net/w/pPywMiF7kjumFfMrQKHzoU YT: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VJLzVEhY2PY Text (WIP): https://github.com/HeliBorg/HeliBoard/wiki/Background-Gesture-Data-Gathering Active gathering was also changed to focus on common words. We still want active gathering data; background data is a supplement not a replacement! 2/3

I'm back on GrapheneOS ☺️ I settled for an Google Pixel 10 Pro XL. Will try to keep that for two years but we'll see. I have a tendency to buy new hardware quite often. (way too often). And of course I started donating to GrapheneOS again. Today I found a great keyboard that has support for auto correct in many languages, my included (Swedish). The keyboard app is HeliBoard, an actively developed fork of OpenBoard. So far I've found one app that does not really work with GrapheneOS and that is a car parking app (Parkering Göteborg), but I haven't used that in ages and I've read that there should be other ways to pay for parking in Göteborg when / if I go there again. #GrapheneOS #Pixel #GooglePixel #GooglePixelProXL #Android #HeliBoard #Keyboard #AndroidKeyboard #FreeSoftware #OpenSource #Swedish #Language #AutoCorrect
