Chaos reigns in the United Kingdom, a fault is blocking departures from London and Manchester airports: delays and cancellations.
Flights across the United Kingdom are experiencing delays and cancellations. The disruptions are caused by a technical issue with air traffic control, which has affected several airports, including Heathrow and Gatwick. Authorities say resolving the problem will require “time.” London’s airports are the worst hit: departures have been drastically reduced since the fault was reported in the early afternoon today.
Most flights departing from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and London airports after 2pm are delayed or have not taken off. Problems also occurred at Manchester Airport. The air traffic control service Nats has communicated that it is “committed to investigating a technical issue that is causing some disruption to departures.” The cause of the fault, which resided in its flight processing system, has been identified: “Our engineers are on site and working urgently to restore normal operations as soon as possible. We are aware of the inconvenience for travelers and apologize.”

"'A statement said all lines were blocked between London Paddington station and Heathrow's terminals, as well as Reading, due to "a failure of the electricity supply caused by a fire next to the track".'
'It comes hours after a separate grass fire on Heathrow's airfield shut a runway earlier on Saturday.'

Heathrow third runway likely to harm health of millions nearby, official report warns https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/jun/18/heathrow-third-runway-likely-to-affect-health-millions-people-nearby-official-report

While Heathrow claims adding a third runway would add 0.5% to GDP annually, the Govt.'s own calculation it would likely be a tenth of that (at 0.05%).
As both figures are within the normal margin of error for estimates of GDP, we can safely say that the authorities at Heathrow are taking a punt on any likely contribution....
More likely is that it will actually just allow more transfers with little economic benefit to anyone other than the airport & airlines.

#OnThisDay 23 February 2016, Queen Elizabeth II visited the under-construction Bond Street station as Boris Johnson, then Mayor of #London, announced Crossrail would be renamed the Elizabeth line in her honour. Joined by #Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin and senior transport figures, she toured the site and was presented with a commemorative roundel. The railway, later known as the Elizabeth line, was expected to transform travel across London and the South East, supporting thousands of jobs and new homes while boosting the economy. Running from Reading and #Heathrow to Shenfield and Abbey Wood, it was designed to increase rail capacity and carry more than half a million passengers a day when fully open.

#Transport for #London has reminded customers that Tube and rail #fares will rise from 1 March 2026, in line with the Government’s funding settlement, while bus and tram fares will remain frozen until 5 July 2026 as a cost-of-living measure. Travelcards and daily and weekly caps are frozen until March 2027. No single pay as you go Tube fare in Zones 1–6 will increase by more than 20p. Elizabeth line fares from Zone 1 to #Heathrow will rise to £15.50 for a single journey, though caps protect regular travellers.
Free travel on routes SL4, 108 and 129, introduced with the new Silvertown Tunnel, has been extended until 26 May 2026, alongside free cycle shuttle services and DLR cross-river refunds. The Mayor, Sadiq Khan, said the freeze supports lower-income Londoners.

A Westminster Hall debate on #Transport in the South East took place on 3 February 2026, opened by Jess Brown-Fuller MP. Buses in the region are largely deregulated, though the Bus Services Act 2025 allows local authorities to franchise routes. The South East has an extensive rail network, served by operators including Avanti West Coast, Chiltern, GWR, CrossCountry, South Western, Southern, Thameslink and Southeastern, with major projects including East-West Rail and HS2. National Highways manages strategic roads, while local roads fall to county or unitary councils; the Lower Thames Crossing is a key project. #Heathrow and #Gatwick #airports may expand, and major ferry routes link the Isle of Wight and #France.
