reflecting a lot on #fediverse lately. instance hopping is such an event and sometimes disruptive. ive spent a lot of time running #chatmail relays and until recently contributing to upstream. we can relay hop and its almost silent. your cryptographic identity is owned by you, not the relay operator. giving you a feeling or being nomadic. servers go down, operators retire or fade out. but you keep your identity.
this works great for #deltachat and enjoy the flexibility. but #activitypub doesn't have an agreed upon implementation. @silverpill@mitra.social is doing great work with his research and #mitra ecosystem. my hopes are eventually we'll see this on fedi across the ecosystems.

It's hard these days to find a unifying description, or know about all the people and communities involved in #deltachat #chatmail #webxdc developments. One shared sentiment probably is wanting to develop anti-authoritarian technologies and cultures around it, and being opposed to authoritarian tech policy moves in the West, chat control, age verification, prescribing Google/Apple control, enforcing digital app use etc
It's also a reason we are only posting on the fediverse bridged to bsky.

A note on "#deltachat is going proprietary with #chatmail relays":
1) It's all based on IETF standards, with configuration and custom integration code fully FOSS and documented at: https://chatmail.at/doc/relay/ with hundreds of permission-free deployments.
2) We know of several alternative relay implementations and deployments
3) Own servers or big email providers can be used (YMMV)
However it's fair to criticize our relentless focus on E2EE, and our moving away from email addresses as identity.

@poes@sok.egois.org @nawanp@fe.disroot.org ada kok buat host sendiri #deltachat: #chatmail. Tapi gak usah chatmail pakai SMTP dan IMAP biasa juga bisa kok. Dah pernah coba. Paling "agak boros" batere kalo IMAP nya gak support IMAP IDLE. Dan create user nya gak bisa dari aplikasi deltachat.
Sebenernya masalah quota di nine.testrun.org atau host lainnya itu cuma bakal ngaruh buat offline message. Deltachat pakai email itu cuma buat relay kalo pas offline dan kalo gak salah bantu discovery. Begitu online dan kesedot, selanjutnya antar deltachat baik dengan akun lain ataupun akun sendiri kalo multiple device dia p2p pake #iroh.
Tapi kalo mau agak gede quota nya, pake relaynya dari #arcanechat, dapat 2GB

"Popularity is overrated" is an often occuring phrase in our circles. Which is of course nonsense because only what is popular, counts, right? Only what everybody else does is a valid choice, right? #deltachat #chatmail and #webxdc are used in private places and communities that people are molding for themselves. We are just providing tools and approaches that work ... At least most of the time 😅 "Nothing works all the time" is another project mantra. Brb preparing the next releases :)

the public #chatmail relay list https://chatmail.at/relays covers about ~20% or so of chat relays we heart about and have traces or hints from, and we definitely don't see everything -- which is how it should be :)

What if all public funding and all private donations to our efforts stop tomorrow?
Users should be fine for years thanks to the wonderful world-wide community of #chatmail relay operators 💜 Relays are dirt cheap to run. Also, our developments are much cheaper and less complex compared to what we know from comparable efforts.
No worries though!
We currently have moneys to help sustain ~15 contributors, with a sum similar to what other projects pay for their foundation president/CEO alone :)

Wenn ich #DeltaChat mit einer E-Mail Adresse verwende kann ich E-Mails-Adressen anschreiben. Wenn ich eine Chatmail Adresse verwende nicht.
