I think what you're describing here is, basically, the concept of tragedy.
Othello could solve the plot of his play in thirty seconds, simply by realising that Iago is an asshole. He does not do this, because trusting Iago is part of Othello's identity. Hamlet could solve the plot of his play in thirty seconds, simply by not being an overthinker stuck in analysis paralysis. He does not do this because that's who he is.
In a tragedy, the bad thing could be averted, but isn't, because the protagonist would have to act against their own nature to avert it. This gives tragedy its sense of inevitability and makes it so fun to read.
That isn't to say that all tragedy is well done, of course. Like all dramatic forms, it can feel really unsatisfying when done by a hack. But when done well, it feels great because we can shout at the screen "NO DON'T TRUST IAGO HE'S LYING" while at the same time understanding why the protagonist does trust Iago.
There's no reason why this can't be applied to institutions too. We are, arguably, living through a tragedy in which Microsoft has been built into a cult by Nadella (first the cult of agile, then the cult of LLMs) and cannot save itself because that would require it to behave non-cultishly.
My sympathy for having been stuck on the inside of real-life failures, though. Seeing large corporations fail to do what must be done is the reason I've always avoided management jobs and just been a senior IC. You are made of sterner stuff than me if you risked that, and I'm sorry to hear it treated you that badly.

In retrospect, I think a lot of pacifists were right that disarming the US completely in 2020-2024, including conventional weapons, would have been a smart decision. That was a moment where it could have been done, it wasn't like it was in our grandparents' time, but the moment wasn't taken.

With respect, I've been beating this drum for most of my adult life. People chose not to listen because they thought their country was always going to have the moral high ground. There was definitely a tone of smugness in their voices when they expounded on that, too. "If we don't have an army, how can we stop rogue states?" and never "If we have an army, what happens when we become a rogue state?"
And now that people are listening and have learned a measure of humility, it's too late for this war, but I don't find it acceptable to blame me for that.
I believe in you. I believe you can be smarter than this. Be against the next war ahead of time.

No matter how awful a president we South Africans elect, no matter how despicable his beliefs are, he cannot nuke anyone. This is because we chose to get rid of all of our nuclear weapons in the late 1980s, inviting in foreign inspectors in 1991 to certify that we had no stockpile and no ability to create one.
South Africa is a long way from perfect but we are the only people in the world democratic enough to have rid ourselves of weapons of mass destruction, and thereby limited the powers of any future bad presidents ahead of time.

The very short version is that he is a very senior tech dude on the business side rather than the actual coding side, has worked in Google and places like that. The sort of person who we think of as belonging on LinkedIn. The sort who thinks tech happens in meeting rooms rather than in command lines. You know the type.
Anyway, he posted a thread about how Mastodon is not going to be taken seriously until we stop being mean to AI aficionados. As he wrote it turned into something of a meltdown, with the term bubble used extensively, and finally led to comparisons between Black people not feeling welcome on Mastodon (which is a problem and sucks) and AI boosters not feeling welcome (which is good and proper and we should bully them more.)
After a great deal of pushback, he said he was going to back off and reconsider, which is the classy thing to do; and then got back into fighting with individuals, which is not.

If you're determined to proceed via electoral channels, then a good starting point might be to refuse to vote for any party which restricts antifascist organising or uses the power of the law against antifascists. France's banning of Jeune Garde, for example, is unacceptable.
You could also press for the cessation of EU policies which fascists love, for example Frontex or the support of Israel's ongoing campaign of genocide.
As ever, it is tempting to see the enemy as an external threat, but this misses the point. Vladimir Putin is not the main threat to Finland, for example. Riika Purra is the main threat to Finland, and she doesn't have to hide her face for safety.

An example is UKIP's planned attack on mosques in Birmingham this very weekend. You are welcome to come to Birmingham to oppose them if you want. There will probably be a lot of cops there to keep the fascists safe.
It's important to understand that violent fascist thuggery gets organised regularly in the UK by people with their real names and real faces, under the full knowledge of the police, and said police do nothing. At worst they might briefly hold a few high-profile people, but it's not serious: is Danny Tommo behind bars? Is Tommy Robinson, or Mark Collett, or Nick Tenconi?

(I don't monitor twitter though, it's just a garbage hellsite, and most of the real fash are elsewhere. British hard fash mostly use Telegram, soft fash mostly use Whatsapp, and it's worth monitoring both.)

I speak as a somewhat experienced antifascist who started doing infiltrations around 2013-2014, in the start of what was later called the alt-Right; and who has done more than his share of street actions.
There's a myth that these sorts of accounts are mostly bots, and I really don't think that's true. Like yes, some of them are impostors, that is certainly the case. But if you look at the polls, Reform is at 28.6% in the UK and RN is at 35% in France. That means a quarter of Brits and a third of French hold fascist views, and so if you see a quarter to a third of social media accounts being openly fascist, that's about what you'd expect. That's just who Europeans are.
In my infiltration work, one thing I notice is that the hyperonline gommos tend to have anime avatars and stuff like that, but the more scary people, those with jobs and houses and families and blood-and-soil politics, those tend to be the same person online as they are in real life. In antifascist communities we are deeply security-conscious, but these people really tend not to be. If you wear a mask around them they'll get suspicious and, in my experience, will lecture you about how covid is fake. Their security doesn't come from anonymity but from tight social conformity and from knowing that the cops agree with them.
They are the people who try to propel Jordan Bardella and Nigel Farage into office, will queue up to work at Frontex, and who have scary domestic violence records. They are not bots, they are worse than that.

This is obviously true on Facebook and LinkedIn, but if you ever go to fascist Telegram groups, a lot of them are full of people with real names, and profile pics of them with sunglasses and baseball caps sitting in their cars. They aren't ashamed of who they are or what they do, and they aren't afraid of consequences.

This is obviously true on Facebook and LinkedIn, but if you ever go to fascist Telegram groups, a lot of them are full of people with real names, and profile pics of them with sunglasses and baseball caps sitting in their cars. They aren't ashamed of who they are or what they do, and they aren't afraid of consequences.

Niemöller actively campaigned on behalf of the NSDAP during the election in which the Nazis took power. He described Hitler as "the man of providence" and claimed that voting for him was the only way to keep Germany christian and non-communist. Later, when Hitler was in power and it was too late, he turned against the Nazis.
After the war Niemöller claimed remorse and tried to rewrite history to make it seem as if he had always been antifascist. This largely worked: most people only know him as the man who did not speak out against Hitler, rather than the man who spoke out loudly and repeatedly in favour of Hitler.
