I stated a fact. I regret that you feel it was unfair of me, but I do not believe that alters the basic tenet of the fact qua fact. I am open to the idea that my interpretation of their corporate history may be unduly pessimistic, but there has been a lot of flailing without much to show for it, and the fact that there are even more companies now doesn't really fill me with hope.

The original response to my post was slagging KaiOS and implying that Jolla had some kind of advantage over it. I was pointing out that KaiOS Technologies, Limited still exists, whereas Jolla Oy does not.
In fact, between Jolla Oy, Jolla Group Ltd, Seafarix, and Jollyboys, it's possible they've produced more companies than phones. I can tell you're emotionally invested in Sailfish, but I do not regard this as a promising sign of future success.

Still not sure how "barely any new phones" differentiates Sailfish and KaiOS.
10k pre-orders is meaningless noise in the mobile market. It's a rounding error.
Having no company, no employees, no hardware program, and no revenue is a hell of a lot better than having a company, employees, hardware program, and revenue, and no resulting advantage, and a previous failed company.
I would love to live in a world where Sailfish is a major player. They have demonstrated for over a decade that they cannot achieve that goal.

- KaiOS is not noticeably less ‘smart’ than Jolla. They’ve chosen to aim downmarket, but that is not a technical limitation.
- Sailfish is also ‘almost dead.’ Jolla isn’t even a company any more, just a brand name rescued from the flames of Rostelecom investment. It’s a series of Kickstarter projects with mixed results.
Having used Sailfish and also literally all of the alternatives I mentioned, several of them (particularly UBPorts and PostmarketOS) are at least as good as Sailfish. An ancient Oneplus 6 running Phosh on PostmarketOS is a better successor to the Nokia N9 than anything Jollyboys has in the hopper.

not in the US, at least. if something is not subject to copyright, it's public domain. public domain stuff can be included in an otherwise-copyrighted work, including work covered by the GPL, without otherwise affecting the license. the GPL requires copyright to be assigned in the circumstances where there is copyright, but the public domain is not such a circumstance, so it's GPL-compatible.
slopcode is not copyrightable, but editing it even a little places it in the purview of human creation, so this isn't really a problem in practice; whoever fucks with the slop well enough to get it to run would be the copyright holder. the question is: does fucking with slop create a whole new derivative work, entitling the unfucker to copyright over the whole project, or does slopfucking create a circumstance where only the human-effort modifications are subject to copyright within an otherwise public-domain project? I have no idea.

I have a car so equipped. You don't get a per-tire readout of pressure, just a dashboard light. Once the light comes on, it's up to you to figure out which wheel. I've never experienced a 'both sides are low' situation, but given the fact that you have to manually tell it what the 'right' rotation rate is, I'd assume it can handle that.

VW had TPMS with no sensors. You push a button to calibrate it when you know your tires are at the correct presure, then the ABS sensor can detect via rotation speeds if a wheel is the wrong diameter: low air.

none of this has changed, but the fatal flaw is that it is not reliable as a phone. you will miss calls or texts or both. the best OS for it is postmarketos, which runs better on the oneplus 6 or 6t. I'm speaking as someone who owns both devices. I wouldn't buy the pinephone at all if I had it to do over again.
the real problem with this plan is VoLTE. it is carrier and device (and based on your location, possibly carrier account) dependent whether it will work or not. I was able to get VoLTE working on the oneplus 6t with postmarketos only after registering an e911 address with my T-Mobile account.

I have now completed two full working weeks with an M4-processor Apple laptop running MacOS. I had heard a lot about how amazing and fast these things are, and let me tell you: no
utter horseshit, the speed is pretty unremarkable (it's fine) but the OS itself reminds me of 2007-era linux (nothing works quite right, random UI elements lag, text scaling doesn't meaningfully work, every program comes with a quirks list because each model is apparently differently broken)

I've been able to do this by downloading the Android SDK and launching a VM 'phone' to install signal, then linking it to the desktop app by pointing the computer's webcam at its own screen. Every so often I have to launch the VM and run the app or the desktop client whines and stops working. It sucks pretty bad. Being tied to phones is the dumbest part of Signal.
