Openfire deployments have been running in the wild for a *long* time.
Some started when Java 5 was current, Docker didn't exist yet, and IPv6 was still "future tech".

We are exploring support for #MariaDB, #Firebird and #CockroachDB in Openfire. This includes early pull requests and discussion of trade-offs, maintenance cost and real-world demand.
We would love community input before proceeding further.

We have released version 5.0.4 of Openfire, our #XMPP-based, open source, real-time communications server! This is a bugfix release, that will increase stability of our 5.0 branch while we finalize work on an upcoming 5.1.0 release. The Smack developers are happy to announce the availability the first release candidate (RC) of Smack 4.5.0.
The upcoming Smack 4.5 release contains many bug fixes and improvements. Please consider testing this release candidate in your integration stages and report back any issues you may found. The more people are actively testing release candidates, the less issues will remain in the actual release.

In January 2007, Ignite Realtime launched the red5 plugin for Openfire, introducing flash-based media server capabilities. Over time, #WebRTC became the standard for audio and video conferencing. Ignite's work evolved into various plugins supporting diverse media use cases.
#XMPP is regaining popularity, with Openfire leading due to its flexibility.

Openfire 5.0.0 beta is out now, fixing about 125 issues!
Big changes include needing Java 17 (no more Java 11), a major web server upgrade, and security updates from an audit.
Tested by developers and the Ignite Realtime community, it's looking good, but they need your help to test more before the full release.
