@Nickiquote@mstdn.social Consequentialist positions cause the “it’s impossible” retort. It’s much harder to retort “it’s impossible” to the people who argue for a better world on rights-based or deontological grounds. Consequentialist arguments appeal to consequences are what allow this. Rights-based arguments appeal to justice and usually have much stronger evidence that the moral criteria they use will be satisfied by the changes they advocate.

A stronger position is to accept the wage labor contract as mutually beneficial, but demonstrate that it violates workers’ inalienable rights, as David Ellerman argues. Inalienable rights are rights that can’t be given up or transferred, even with consent. Ellerman’s work also highlights the stark contrast between what capitalists get and what employees get when property rights and liabilities are considered.

Economists are fully aware of this but try to obfuscate this fact. This violates the whole claimed basis of private property of people getting the fruits of their labor.
