Seems we have bad Enviolo karma (rear hub with stepless gears). First hub on the cargo bike unscrewed itself after 145km. Now the one we got as a replacement started making weird noises around 9,800km and is doing a disorienting wobble if pedalling backwards. Manufacturer claims they last 30k km. #cycling

For the poor international readers: this is a toy website that challenges you to make endless looping compound words, because it is something you can do in Finnish. Also in German, Icelandic, Swedish… although in those you need to handle the combos like "tvättmaskin+s+försäljar-e +möte". This does gleefully ignore similar complexities that do exist in Finnish too.

Noticed a fun Finland detail in the 2024 documentary ”Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron”:
A picture of a book cover, with Gallen-Kallela’s Sibelius portrait is prominently visible in Miyazaki’s workspace.
True enough, the portrait is a direct inspiration for the portrait of the granduncle seen in the film.

The painting has obvious Japanese influences, so this becomes a full circle of influences of sorts. Not rare with Miyazaki!

Old Sibelius didn’t end up looking like the old wizard, however!

If you have missing absolute links like this
C:\Users\feefoo\Maps\Layers\MyLostMap.shp
You can fix them in ”Handle Unavailable Layers"
by editing the path to a relative link: Layers\MyLostMap.shp
On Mac you need to replace the \ with /.

Sure wish this was more automatic though. Like InDesign is able to find missing layers by just pointing it at the right folder.

@db@typo.social It is an interesting thing to think about, this interplay between type and handwriting… If a designer uses a ”handwritten” typeface, how often is the goal for the text to ”pass” as handwritten to a casual observer? … even Scribo is easily ”caught”, which exposes a practical limitation of the deterministic OpenType engine. A ”true” simulated handwriting typeface would probably be more feasible with some entirely different technology.

Idly wondering, what is the most complex / well made handwriting-simulation typeface made?

Underware’s faces are pretty benchmark, like Scribo, with 1403 glyphs that substitute as you type.

Finnish is merciless, as you can see in the image below, ”tt” and ”ä” characters repeat.
