@thunfisch@chaos.social I think you should start mirroring to codeberg.org, especially if you're already paying for it. Also consider mirroring to your own forgejo instance if you already have money to throw at this and just stop paying gitlab. I know it's a pain in the ass. I've been doing the same thing with github over the course of almost a full year now, but it's worth it. You'll still find all the community and the people who don't follow you, don't have the same priorities anyway. Codeberg, for instance, as much more more anti-AI community and while some AI is present there, Forgejo itself has an anti-AI policy, which is all codeberg.org is under the hood, so you can at least rest assured that it's going to remain slop free for the time to come at least.

Really appreciating GoToSocial's reply and boost requests feature, especially when discussing code of conducts.

I'm able to reject replies and boosts on this instance and it makes me much more confident about posting things. Sure, other instances may not respect those things, but it doesn't matter to me because they can't bother me here. I love the fediverse, and I especially love GoToSocial's approach to it :gotosocial: :heart_cyber:

Anyone got a recommendation for a low profile USB-C opensource physical security key?

I know about solokeys, but unlike yubikey, they don't have a short USB-C security key.

I also saw Somu (also solokeys) which are the right form factor, but they only support USB-A.

If not, do you know if solokey is ever gonna come out with a mini USB-C key? I really need a tiny yubikey type thing I can just forget about.

(I have full sized keys already as backups, just in case.)

Edit: I've added a picture of the YubiKey 5C Nano as an example of what I'm after. The idea is that the total length that sticks out from the computer is very very small, and therefore is less likely to break off.

@sophieop I'm actively going through the code base right now, but the python client is the client you get when you do a default install of tldr on most platforms. My goal is to first just support releasing to pypi, so people can start pip installing it, and then from there, I'll probably be asking others for advice on how to like, release for debian at least, because that's where I do the bulk of my linuxing :) If you ever have the mental bandwidth, you're always welcome to come help out! :heart_cyber:

I'm forking tldr-pages because I want it to exist without AI and without GitHub:

also forked the python client because it's the language I'm best at:

A lot of maintaining a repo is kind of like being a librarian. You are largely a knowledge keeper. Yes, you also write code and fix things, but you're kinda like the go to person for "does this already exist? Has someone brought this up? Did anyone try to do it? Why can't we do it this way? If you were to do this, how would you go about learning how to do it?" and for the most part, that's fine. It's chill, fairly easy (if not a little taxing) work, but it really all falls apart when someone comes in and they're rude to the librarian.

...because unlike the librarian, no one is paying me to maintain that FOSS repo, so if you're mean to me, I'll eventually stop going to work, and slowly but surely the books will become a mess. You won't be able to find anything. You won't be able to ask why something is the way it is. There will be no one to take and index donations. There will be no one to hold anyone accountable for returning any books. And eventually, the library will fill with various critters, because there will be no one to close the doors or windows.

Just please, I beg of you, be nice to the librarian. Don't make them hate books or you won't have libraries.

I really love that the fediverse cannot "go down" or "have an outage". Sure, an instance can go down, but there's literally tens of thousands of instances. This instance alone is networked with over 13,000 other instances. I love that for us.

Most people I know on here have backup accounts on other instances and a lot of people link them on their profile, so you can easily just follow both in the event of their instance shutting down. I think that's cool, because it means we're decentralized and it's so hard to take us down entirely. It makes sense why you see so many people complaining about mastodon and the fediverse, because they can't just... buy the fediverse and make it total ad riddled crap like all other social media. We also largely hate AI bots here too, so the content is way more human feeling.

It's not without it's problems. No social media is without it's problems, because humans have large scale social problems that follow them wherever they go and communicate, but comparatively, it's better managed here. For instance, if there's an instance of bad actors, say a bunch of literal neonazis, you can block the entire instance instead of needing to block each individual neonazi that you normally would have to. This sort of thing made twitter a nightmare for me, because I am visibly queer and so sometimes I'd just get raided by large groups and the best I could do was private my account, cutting me off from essentially the entire public, instead of just he group of bad actors.

There's also just the kinds of communities that form here are different. I've learned about so many new free and open source technologies, environmental problems and helpful tips to combat them, people's own music, drawn/painted art, pottery, and fiber arts. It's been so lovely to see people be in community with one another here to create things.

It absolutely takes more work to craft your feeds and find your people here, but it's so much more worth it. I can't see myself going back to traditional corporate run social media. It sounds like a nightmare of AI, ads, and isolation.

@Sascha@bonn.social @cdonat@hostsharing.coop I just have a GoToSocial for that. I think the only thing I really miss about Facebook or LinkedIn was proper support in the UI for Groups, so it was a little easier to connect with people based on specific interest, or in this case, professional skillsets. It'd be nice to join a systems engineering or devops or SRE group, but beyond that, I'm not sure what profed would really offer that we don't already have.
