I finally replaced the 11 year old tires on my econobox. Had a good laugh about how old they were with the guy at the tire shop. The fuel economy is better and they are QUIET. They are so quiet that I now can hear a suspicious clank noise that my car makes when accelerating from a stop :blobcatgoogly:

This post made me think about the user hostile and anti-libre aspects of our lives. It seems like a lot of them are anchored by capital intensive projects like LLMs, smart phones, TVs, automobiles. Those kinds of things are extremely hard to displace or defang with a software-only approach. Where do we go from here?

One of the big lessons I learned is that you can't assume the model will scrutinize anything on its own. This is my long winded way of saying that it might not even require prompt injection, or not very advanced prompt injection. It'll be interesting to get more details about this.

As more of my friends get EVs and I start researching it a bit myself, it's fun seeing people successfully use SI units like kWh in everyday life. Like okay, miles/kWh is a funny mix of imperial and metric, but at least I'm seeing less of the abomination that is MPGe.

Reposting that arxiv paper on the trust issues with inference providers and inference routers. I think the main thing that gets lost on people is that it's not just the model that can do damaging things to your system, but there are ways for the service operators to inject attacks also. And every extra router hop in the inference chain is an additional set of operators that you need to trust.

Critiquing myself a bit, I don't know if using the same tired term "tech debt" is the best description here. Maybe more specifically it should be called "complexity debt".

It's actually a huge luxury in CS that virtually everything can be reasoned about bottom up by construction. So many other fields have to deal with black boxes as just a fact of life.
Something I think about a lot now is how computer touching traditionally rewards having what I'll call a math-physics adjacent mindset. But LLMs have kind of turned this on its head and I really think we would benefit from having some biology or other life science people around.

Edit: I should also say, the wallet adjacent apps that matter for me all seem to give me QR codes outside of wallet (ie. airlines, points memberships, etc). I think the most annoying part is carrying a physical transit card again.

@mhoye I was a grid battery naysayer, and I fully own that I was wrong about that. By the numbers it really looks like it is happening.
On top of that some grid batteries use cells repurposed from old EV packs. There's actually some material lifecycle stuff going on there. It's so so good.
