PSA regarding the Mullvad VPN situation: I emailed and requested a refund and after providing details they compensated me for the days remaining in my subscription. In my reading, that’s not their refund policy and is not in their recent statement on Mastodon.

@lina@vt.social well said. The right to read does not apply to a chatbot, despite what Cory Doctorow might believe. From a tech standpoint, I’m pretty disappointed US district court judges aren’t willing to view the model itself as an infringing derivative though (the “walking copyright violation” scenario). So the only real source of liability is the output at the moment, and even then you still have to clear the fair use bar which involves tackling arguments that get support in the front end of the training.

Update: it was apparently because they added an 'xwayland-scaling-factor' key to the gsettings schema that my system did not compile in and was erroring out when I tried to set. (Full backtrace with debug symbols told me the error causing the core dump was failure to find the key in gsettings for that setting.) I had to set the envidonment variable GSETTINGS_SCHEMA_DIR="/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas" in /etc/environment to get it to pick up the new schema. No idea where it was getting schemas from before since the internet says that's the default location for schemas.

To the surprise of no one, gnome-shell in GNOME 50 has started failing to make it past login for some users, likely because at least something or other depended on the legacy X support in the DE.

Source: currently trying to fix my system after the upgrade. gnome-shell coredumps on login. Next thing to try is backing up my config and fully resetting dconf.

The standard in this case will probably be slightly different, if the claim is that their mark is descriptive they will have to prove secondary meaning. I checked TSS, the mark was registered in ‘23 so they may have a difficult time proving to a jury that this term is associated with their brand.

@lina@vt.social I see. The one UX hole in this would be that to join your friend’s space that was created on another hosting, you have to sign in again. (The Gitlab problem.) Unless you’re storing your token client side and the app handles all the authentications with additional data sources. But then how do your different clients know what spaces you’re in? There would need to be some state that is updated and passed back to the identity server.

@emmiehine@dair-community.social I was writing this as a subtoot, but I changed my mind. Claude does not have a context window that can appreciate or interrogate Madison’s point of view. I think the response to the prompt is a statistical muddling of all of the page-rank “authoritative” content on the internet, plus anything in the embedding space that sounded like it was trying to be self-evident on any topic related to basic legal principles. This all makes me think any observed tension between this response and Madison is just confirmation bias. Constitutional scholars have a point of view, and a defined lens through which they interrogate a work. In my opinion, without a perspective, an alternate reading of a founding document is just…slop.

@heidilifeldman I’m no expert on fed courts, but prospective relief against federal officers for federal constitutional violation is a very internally inconsistent/chaotic area of law to couch this in. Maybe the 10th Amendment hook is enough for a judge to accept the state’s arguments and for the equitable remedy fashioned to survive on appeal?

I applied to a Canonical dev job back when I had just graduated undergrad, thankfully avoided this trauma by virtue of their email service not sending the IQ tests to my email address. I had multiple emails from a recruiter (which they never responded to my replies to) telling me to take the IQ test they’d sent me and saying they’d re-send it, but said test never came even when I gave them alternate emails to try and eventually they/I just gave up.
