It’s the only tool/library I use for serious data retrieval of column oriented data structures. You want to prep your parquet files thoughtfully. decent row group size and sort order but it does the rest.

Have been trying out an #oura4 ring and was alarmed when it told me my #cardiovascularheath looked like someone 9 years older than I am. Was sobering. I reflected on life today, forced the dogs to take an extra long walk with me and was planning to fit in a bike ride up one the larger hills in #SanFrancisco tomorrow, and then I thought hang on... checked the app settings and it had picked up a completely random birth date - probably the product of a lifetime of lying to anyone who tries to collect my true date of birth.. Still going on the bike ride tomorrow. I'm no #datascientist but betting my heart will look better relative to my age tomorrow...

@solar_chase I think it’s a practical sensible investment but also just anything that upsets the Trump administration is fine with me at this point. The harder they try to destroy the planet the more motivated I am to see fossil fuel interests distressed.

@solar_chase made and at least partially consumed. Did you use a whole bottle of wine as the primary liquid ingredient? Honestly choked on the vapor layer. This is one of those situations where you think bottle of delicious Cab sav (verified)? butter? pasta? how can you go wrong??! My opinion as a biochemist was too little lipid and not enough cook time - it's not as presented in that pic either - they added things they don't include in the recipe. To be fair we omitted the ANCHOVY but that got pretty awful reviews...

The #nytcooking team really struck this time. "One pot pasta" that called for a whole bottle of white wine. This review summarizes the outcome nicely

@ZachWeinersmith after a lot of testing we have found the sweet spot is bottling applesauce. It’s an almost instant apple pie. If you can make dough quickly, the effort reward ratio on cider was just way too low. you might enjoy kombucha if you want to ferment things on a more reasonable human time scale.

I thought it had to be a plumbing issue, but with #homeautomation in play, it was actually #DNS failure leading to #NTP protocol failure, leading to it being "midday" for the front garden.. #IOT ... a thing of beauty

#linux admin got so much easier with #LLM tech.. all those obscure commands and errors you would paste endlessly into search engines trying to decipher the disease that had suddenly afflicted your operating system is fixable now in a heartbeat. I know lots of folks aren't happy about #AI for all sorts of reasons, and LLMs aren't even real-AI but they are incredibly effective at distilling huge bodies of technical documentation and sorting through them. Also the reason they are likely to be very effective at medical diagnosis..

That animal had all the time in the world to step back and raise his gun. He wasn’t threatened for a moment and yet the NYT still leads with „disputed“ b/c of course propagandists do tend to dispute reality.

@danluu there are some great studies on building demolition where they put dummies in different places and then assess how well they did post demolition. IIRC being next to things >> under things (between beds, not under tables). The #sfba has earthquakes just enough that we do something about it. I worry about the other parts of the whole west coast, b/c the risk seems to be similar but kind of understandably it's harder to motivate people to deal with hypothetical risks. #earthquake
