Brag time! I've had this idea for *years* and have been working on it with greater seriousness since early January. The slab came from a red maple that was in our tree lawn. The city cut it down when replacing lead water pipes. It is finished with tung oil. The uplighting are Sienna dim-to-warm strips and the bulbs are from the ghost line by Be•bulbs. I may be proudest of the flange, which is purely decorative. There is a functional one above it behind the drywall. #DIY #woodworking

@Guillawme@fediscience.org this is a *FANTASTIC* fundamental question!! I don't know if your proposed method would work since I think fluorophore response might be temperature dependent as well. I am not a kineticist or a physical chemist, but I generally thing of proton transfers in water between things that have pKa in the 0-14 range to be borderline barrierless, so I kinda think maybe? how big are the things being vitrified? I don't know cryoEM #chemistry #pH

Egregious behavior from UPS. A gift was sent to my child by an aunt. When it arrived, they said we needed to pay a $50 tariff. We refused delivery. They then sent my kid a bill for $77.47 that arrived after May 2nd but saying it had to be paid by May 2nd or they would also charge late fees. #tariffs #UPS #badbehavior

I'm looking for a fabric CD/DVD wallet, like I remember from the 90's. Every one I've seen is absolute crap - super thin plastic for the pockets that will rip quickly. It can be small capacity (40-50), I just want it to hold up. #askfedi

@sellathechemist Thank you for the kind words. Spherical Cow is a great approach that I’ve been meaning to incorporate myself. I think that, like many courses, it sounds good in theory and, in practice, is highly dependent each time on the mysterious combination of my and the students’ momentary energies, abilities, passions, etc. Some projects are transcendent (e.g. a heroic crown of sonnets featuring data from a theoretical paper on fusion). Others are decidedly less so.

@sellathechemist it is bizarrely chaotic. I do a few weeks of background lectures and then themed weeks based on student interest. Monday is a topical lecture, Wednesday we look at topical general audience media, and on Friday we look at a figure from a recent paper. Semester wraps up with student projects. Due to this, it differs each time around. We almost always have something significant about GHGs or oceans, at which point I teach ocean heat (Carnot & Clausius)

I think they ultimately concluded there probably are microplastics everywhere, but some reports may have reported higher amounts of PE than are actually present due to misidentification of stearate salts. My friends did a thing! Microplastics are very challenging to measure and some existing protocols make it worse. To be clear, the authors are concerned about microplastics, and also concerned that we have analytical methods that will give us real information. Just looked up the pKa of triflic acid and I had forgotten how insane it is (-14.7!!!) and would not have estimated that low based on sulfuric acid having a pKa of -2.8. Like, acetic to trilfluoroacetic only drops by 4.2 pKa unit. Holy hell is that a strong acid!

@lindsey@recurse.social really nicely stated. Most folks in my grad program referred to the professor as their boss. I insisted on calling him my advisor, specifically to remind myself of his role. As a PUI prof, I also like mentee and early career scientist as referents. If the goal was to max out publications, I’d often be better maximizing my lab time, but then I don’t get the joy of helping the next generation along their many rich and varied paths.
