@cy The problem is, when the government prints money, it simply reduces value of all existing money in circulation. Which primarily affects normal people, as billionaires tend to hoard their value in stocks or real estate, safe from inflation. So any approach based on printing money just flattens the 99%, making them all equally poor, while taking nothing from the 1% (but very likely even redistributing more to them). So I kinda fear that an UBI approach will feed the poorest, which is good but will also make the "20% to 99%" poorer (worst case, the entire 99% will be living from paycheck to paycheck, always on the brink to starvation, and will not be able to afford luxury items like an internet connection), while doing nothing at all about the hoarding 1%. I honestly do not see how your idea of solving the food problem should work. So you want the government to decide who can eat how much and what? That sounds like Soviet style planned economy and we all know how well that worked out. Holodomor? The problems I mentioned of course do not happen in small scale pilots yet, so these pilots sadly do not tell the full story.

@cy @Mephisto@mastodon.gamedev.place Indeed. If everyone can afford to eat, then the market sees raising prices will increase profit, until some people are too poor to eat again. The max profit equilibrium is never where everyone can afford it. If one then raises the UBI, one risks ending up where 99% are too poor to eat properly, and 1% are billionaires, evading taxes used to pay the UBI. Like in the USSR. So either one must plug every single tax loophole, or one must cap costs.

@TheConstructor@social.tchncs.de @alios@23.social Man muss wohl zwei Sachen unterscheiden.

@alios@23.social Also ganz ehrlich.

Provide all the options as you never know what faith the hotel guests are. And a package of pasta. Very important.

Obviously this conversely means that the game console companies could actually make money by selling emulators and ROMs, like, at least for their previous generation consoles. It's not like they're even producing the things anyway. To some extent even Nintendo has figured it out (Virtual Console), except not quite.

@juv3nal@phire.place That's fair. I'd still be actually against it on the grounds that if you start making sexual orientation a factor for immigration, a future government could do the exact opposite and e.g. ban LGBTQ+ from coming in. That's a precedent I'd rather not have on the books. Actual persecution is what should matter, for whatever reason. And the very first step should be to simply strike the US from any and all lists of "safe third countries". Using LGBTQ+ persecution as a _reason_ for doing this - definitely fine and correct - may also want to name PoC and Hispanics in particular as well. Just the _action_ shouldn't be that closely limited, as it has been shown the US cannot be trusted. This petition might be a good first step, but if things go badly, it may set an even worse precedent for a future government. That's my fear here.

All US citizens, residents and other people living there can have valid asylum claims (e.g. if I go by those ICE report apps, my home in the US was raided shortly after I left for Germany, despite me having been lawful permanent resident). Let's recognize that.

@arteesetica@mastodon.social Actually, the ethical uses go away when used for internet memes only (where no artist would have been paid anyway). They replace the niche of MS Paint "art". OTOH even for that, the power consumption is not worth it. Now it is kinda required to get one's message across, as nobody looks at ragefaces or similar "crap art" anymore. So we kinda are where we are now, but it probably would have been net positive, had it never been invented.

@benlockwood I might indeed be, but it might be due to my area of work. Like, in my case, I would claim I could develop software just as well without needing VP approval to release my own open source project in my personal capacity because someone made laws that require employees to get approval from their employer to do things in their private time. Similarly, I could develop software for the company just as well if I did not have to write multi-page "launch documents" and have hour-long "launch review meetings" in which nothing whatsoever happens that couldn't have been a 10 lines email. In fact, I could do it _better_, as I'd have more time for heads down work. However, what are AI corporations actually developing? They want to replace the thinking, not the mindless meetings and corporation processes. And that brings me back to your post. Which is true as well. Some people think AI can be used to replace the "lower level" thinking tasks (like writing the code) and you still do the "higher level" ones (like designing it). Which indeed fails just like putting people in charge of management who have no experience with the work being managed. It also has a different problem: if you replace all junior engineers by AI, where are you gonna get senior and staff ones from? You can no longer "raise" them...

It is still a bit weird to sell the same device with different software features (as later developed features need to be bought, even if they were long finished before sale and just the box with the device was sitting somewhere for half a day) for the same name and the same price. Weird, yes, but I am aware many manufacturers already do this (and it's bad when they do it too). Same goes for hidden "hardware revisions" that ultimately decide what you can or can't do with your device, with no difference on the box. So maybe the software version and feature set should be indicated on the box and the in-store advertisement? (And yes, maybe they already are?)

Security vulnerabillities and bugs count as such product flaws. So security and bugfix updates are mandatory for 2 years, whereas you can of course sell feature updates just fine. I of course assume you don't sell in such countries. As for costs - obviously the solution is to consider those support costs in the product price.
