I like Void fine for the most part but the package selection is kinda weak IMHO and Gentoo is cool but I genuinely just do not vibe with how Portage works. For the record, yes, I know about the weird conspiracism many Artix users take part in. It seems to be nearly unavoidable in any Linux distribution space that doesn't use systemd (I even saw a bit of it in Void Linux spaces). I try to just ignore the noise.

Because that's genuinely the only thing I could think when I saw it. Because it's so far from being a good idea. Because it's the worst idea.

@doskel@masto.doskel.net I'm not going to make this into a joke about decrypting messages. We've all seen them. So instead I'll lay out some of my other issues with Matrix and as I've had an account since 2018 I am pretty well familiar with it. First, home servers seem to just always suck. Maybe that's just a me problem but I've been on a few and they all have the same problem where they are slow as molasses. Maybe this would be fixable if I could host my own but I cannot do that so that's not an option. Second, the client problem. Element is just downright bad, the single worst chat program I have ever used (and I've used bizarre single purpose ones that exist for one single small community that decided to larp as AIM for no reason). FluffyChat is the closest to being good but it's still extremely slow and has bizarre UI decisions that I just do not get at all. I've never used Cinny but the fact that it's an Electron program doesn't exactly inspire confidence in me. I also remain extremely uneasy about the fact that Matrix is controlled by New Vector, New Vector are incompetent scum, and it seems like the protocol is deliberately held back to make New Vector's proprietary bullshit look better. The ecosystem of Matrix in general just gives me a dreadful mouthfeel of the exact kind of techbro brained nonsense that already infests so many other interesting on paper projects. Also comparing Signal and Matrix is just a category error and this is a hill I am willing to die on.

@zzt@mas.to @pastelfluffyfox@meow.social I maintain that Mozilla lost the plot sometime around 2015 when they inexplicably decided to kill off XULRunner and with it much of the Mozilla ecosystem in favor of trying to chase the smartphone market (???????????) and since then they've made insane decision after insane decision after insane decision and the only reason I even still use Firefox at all is because it has the extensions I need and I don't want to contribute to the problem by using something based on WebKit. The crowning achievement of their insane decisions is and forever will remain firing the entire Rust team (which was the future of the entire fucking company) so the CEO and chairwoman of a non-profit could be paid a higher salary in the middle of the fucking plague.

@coolbean@brain.worm.pink @rose@pl.pinkro.se Basically, KDE used an IPC bus called DCOP, GNOME used CORBA, they were entirely incompatible with each other, they merged to create D-Bus, and because the now deprecated HAL adopted D-Bus too that caused it to metastasize into being the only IPC that matters on modern Unix. Despite being as unfit for any purpose as humanly possible.
