lyrial, I am a developer of wafrn. so a few things out of the way first.
We don't want to be mbin? I am not sure where you got that. We had some fixes done to make groups (which includes mbin and lemmy stuff) properly federate but that's all.
No one does "fedi" properly, because there is no unified spec. We do so much stuff on-top of ActivityPub that is so hard to track between all this different software that it's difficult to really come to a conclusion on what "The fediverse protocol" is. Just misskey alone has so many extra fields and semantics that aren't in any other software that have caused common features to have several different implementations.
No, we do not rely on AT Protocol. We can optionally use it but you can just… not set it up. In our codebase we're still fedi-first. In fact, it's easier to configure when you simply don't setup anything ATProto related.
Regarding "good", we have people here that like it here. What is "Good" is subjective and this post was entirely not aimed at you, which isn't new to fedi. This post was aimed at people new to Wafrn specifically because I co-moderate the flagship wafrn instance where most people trying this software will end up on.

As you might've seen, people talk of "the fedi" or "the Fediverse" around here a lot, so I wanted to demistify that!
What the hell is a "Fediverse"?Fedi is a place on the web, like where you are right now, but it's also a bit more than that. It's a network of people and communities, and the sites we use are also networked in of themselves.
On the Fediverse, there's a bunch of different sites that pass letters between eachother. These letters are the posts, the likes, the follows you leave and pretty much any other interaction.
When I follow-request someone, it's like sending them a letter from my home address (Wafrn) to their address (Mastodon.social) that says "Alexia would like to follow this person". When they accept it, I get sent a letter back that says "Your follow-request was accepted".
When I like a post, I send a letter "I liked this post" to the person that posted.
Posts themselves are also like this, but just sent en masse; When I post, I send a bunch of letters all around the internet, to every other site that Wafrn knows, that says "Alexia just posted!" that includes the post I just made. And the same goes for replies as well.
And everyone else does all of this too!
How does Bluesky play into this?Bluesky is quite different! There instead of passing around notes, I just kinda write down my post, put it into a little ring binder with my other posts, and then there's this collection agency that looks at my ring binder tells everyone else about my posts. All posts go through this collection agency, so to speak.

What does "Fediverse" stand for, actually?Fediverse is a combination of "Federated" and "Universe", where "Federated" is a word used to describe (in this case) how computers can work together with a common "language", or rather the proper term, using a common protocol.
The details of what protocol aren't too important, but if you're a nerd of that kind you may look into ActivityPub :)

A bit ago I asked if the wafrn peeps were interested in an IRC server, to chat about Wafrn (and other stuff!) on a small little chat-app instead of using Discord.
So, @javascript set that up recently and it's live! We've been testing it for a little bit and things have been working well :)
How do I join???!?!??!?To get started just:

- put a nickname in
- chat!
You can register your nickname by DMing the NickServ bot a message: /msg NickServ REGISTER myAwesomePassword ; Now your nick is registered and you must put in a password the next time you log in :)
Be sure to check the "Wafrn-IRC" panel at the top of the sidebar; Ctrl+K lets you move around, and sending /help shows you other stuff :3
We're also looking into file uploads and stuff, and if you already know how to use IRC you can ofc just join normally :)

perhaps but the aim of the project is moreso to prevent situations in which audio was working and then broke after an update without an easy recovery path.

the idea is that faults like this can be discovered before an update is applied as it's much easier to replicate and test the images, and a partial-upgrade state (which might break something like audio) is entirely avoided as updates are effectively atomic
